Let me start by saying I am new to this forum having only stumbled across it a few months ago after a google search for vintage appliances. It’s been interesting to say the least. I had no idea that vintage washers and dryers were even available let alone sought after and collected. Now after many hours examining the numerous photos of the fine old machines posted on this site, I suddenly find myself considering the purchase of a vintage set for myself. I guess I have all of you to blame---I mean thank for that. I hope you’re proud of yourselves. If you’re not you should be.
So here is the situation I’m in. I don’t currently have the space, nor will I ever have my wife’s permission for any kind of collection like some of you have managed to put together. I‘ll be able to get just one set, so it will need to be something that can be reliably used on a regular basis. Based on many of the comments I’ve read here I’ve been looking for older Maytags and have found an old gas model 502 dryer for sale. The guy wants $100 for it and I’m OK with the price though I’ll likely try to talk him down to $80. The problem is that it’s blue, and as most of the vintage Maytags that turn up seem to be white I’m worried that a matching blue washer will be very hard to find. I’m going out to look at it Monday morning and will take some pictures so you can see what condition it’s in. My question is basically this. If this dryer is in good condition as the seller claims it is, is the model 502 reliable enough for regular use? Are spare parts available for it? And finally, is a blue dryer likely to be as difficult to match up with a blue washer as I fear it is? Any help with this will be appreciated. Thanks to all.
