Hi, I am new here and am helping a friend who does not have computer access. He recently acquired a Maytag E2L ringer washer. I was able to purchase the instruction manual for it here, but he would like to get a service manual as well. Any idea where I can find one for him?

Try eBay, and used the saved search feature to mail you updates. I got all my Maytag tech literature there. Be warned that prices can be all over the board, so if you are not in an emergency situation don't jump on the first book, another will come along soon enough.
Also know that the E, J, and N share most of their mechanicals and what works for one works for all (usually).
I got my manuals from Phil in Ovid NY. Since your friend doesn't have internet connections, perhaps somebody deals with him through paper mail and has his business address (my only contact with him is by computer.)
>>That being said<< I work on old German cars, which tend to have excellent technical documentation, so I was a little surprised that the Maytag documentation is a little "slack"... there are several practical things that aren't covered properly, at least in the documentation I've seen. Apparently, repair still had an oral tradition element to it. Fortunately, the internet (and specifically this site) will keep you between the rails.

trouble with old oil
Hi , I too just acquired an E2LPS that has been stored for 30 years. Actually two of them. One is nearly in "new" condition. The label was still on the filter under the agitator. The motor hums along perfectly, the pump is strong, but the wringer doesn't engage. When I lifted off the wringer component, turn the machine on, the forked shaft doesn't engage. It can turn manually with a little resistance, and you can hear some gears turning (no strange noises). Someone told me that probably the oil is froze up in all the gears and cams which should normally drop down and seat to engage the wringer. But he also said, "Do NOT unscrew the 3 bolts which cover the entire mechanisms for the wringer as I'll never get them back together. Does anyone have experience with this? Also, I tried the links provided above for the parts and repair n, but they are no longer active. I ordered the owners manual from this site already, but think I should have a parts schematic before undoing anything.
I went to our local (eugene OR) expert on maytag, and find he's dead and the new owner threw out all the old manuals and parts. Boo Hoo!

"Frozen" wringer
There is likely no problem with your wringer. It's probably a safety feature gone bad. Check underneath your washer where the drive goes to the wringer and connects at the leg under the wringer. There is probably a plastic device screwed in there...this was a safety feature that included a rubber tube with a ball at the end to engage and disengage the wringer pneumatically by stepping on the rubber ball. Hopefully this will help you. It will cost you whatever the cost of a 1/2" bolt is, if you don't happen to have one on hand.
