HOH experts please chime in, but the later SOH design has a bigger drum if load capacity is your concern, and they look less complicated to repair

I have used my DE806 as a daily driver and it works extremely well.I use it mostly because its fun and because it reminds me of a girl I used to be friends with.I actually gave her a matched 806 set in 1990 and I heard recently they are still going.

Go for a Whirlpool family or a GE family
I would vote no. Maytag washers may not have been the best performers but they are easy to use and as straightforward as they come unless you're looking for something that you can, literally, set and forget (even TOL Maytags had feeble dispensing systems if you wanted to do anything other than one wash {no soak or pre-wash}and one rinse).
Maytag HOH dryers were, to me, a disappointment. They dried clothes well enough, but they were inflexible, relatively slow, relatively hard to load and unload because that small porthole was very close to the floor, and the lint filter was a pain to get to. On the plus side, they were relatively quiet, gentle on fabrics and the timer only models were trouble-free.

What model of washing machine is being used as the daily driver?
If you wash 1 or 2 loads per day and if the load sizes are from a Maytag washer then I say yes.
If you have a lot of laundry to do on a daily basis then I say no. You would likely experience a bottle neck in the drying time.
But I think you should do what suites you.

HOH driers are efficient, quiet, and exact. They are also SMALL SMALL SMALL inside, and the filter is a pain. If it's your ONLY dryer, you'll find out its weakness (SMALL). But if you have a 29" Whirlpool/Kenmore along with it, you'll have fun with the small loads for the HOH, large loads and blankets and sheets and rugs and long pants in the WP/KM.

As mentioned already these dryers are on the small size, they are designed only for the smaller MT washer and are really only sized for about 8 pound loads.
They also only have one temperature, which is OK if you don't want to dry delicate loads at low temperatures.
They are also about the most fire prone dryer [ the gas models only have a single gas valve that can stick open and the electric models have the heater too close to the clothing and there are no secondary safety's in either fuel dryer] from the 60s on, so I would never leave one running if you are not close by.

I repaired a Halo of heat dryer as a young teenager without much effort. They are as easy to figure out as any other dryer (IMHO). The one I repaired was a portable. It used two belts. One for the drum and one for the fan. Very reliable units.
Oh hell, clean it out and use the damned thing. They are classic old dryers and will do a good job. I'm sure if millions of them caught fire and burned down neighborhoods, the Guvmenk would have already had the gazillion of them Maytag built, recalled.

I use a 1957 Maytag Dryer HOH as my daily drive and a 1940 Maytag N2L also as my daily driver for the last 7 years. Wonderful machines. I service my machines every 6 months, cleaning, oiling, vacuum lint and just general service.
I would not trade these machines for any amount of money or new appliances.
You need to enjoy them and use them.. They were made to work and work hard they do!!!

Yes, the two-piece lint filter in the back of the dryer drum--the last of a dying breed....
Ga-jillions of 'em--most GAS models--were at some flea market in Canada I'd been to in the last of my 'tweens, and relatively few Maytag washers there, but settle for another brand the place had, and you (everything in WHITE) had a matched set... That is, both of each to go 'round, with a few "other brand dryers" as well...
Think it would be a fun dryer to have & to supplement line-drying or line dry whatever is too big, delicate &/or not needing to be immediately done to go in there...

I just converted my gas pilot light hoh to electronic ignition and use it as a daily driver with no problems. We're a family of four with 2 being teenagers so we always have laundry. I use it with a A608 washer and no problems whatsoever so far. The dryer is pretty spot on for drying time too, just about an hour.
Everyone has an opinion, good and bad, Buy one, and tell us your experience.

Maytag hating minority. But most have good luck with tags I had bad luck with every maytag product I ever owned. Try it that's how you learn. After 5 my washers and 3 dryers you couldn't run fast enough to give me one. Lol

On laundry day I run a pair of electric HoH and SoH dryers. The HoH is on the smaller size, but always performs well. I've never found the filter at the back of the drum to be an issue, especially compared to some of the more hokey filter setups on vintage dryers. If it needs work, parts are cheap and plentiful. I say go for it!
