Maytag LAT2914AAE Won't Wash

I must admit I don't know if it's more than 20 years old...am I in the right section ?

My wife overloaded it (AGAIN) and now it won't move when it's on the wash cycle. It appears that if I move the washer thingy a little with my hand, it'll -try- to wash but stop right away...

I haven't looked underneath yet...it still spins and drains.

Is the motor running while in the wash cycle? Could be motor carriage or belt related.

 

Maytags use a spring-loaded carriage on the motor to tension the belt, you could also have a damaged belt as well if it was slipping (glazed or burn-spot). I would check the belts, the red area is the carriage system, you can pull the front panel and see this. Push the motor to make sure it travels smoothly and returns. Also tip the machine back to look at the drive belt (blue) for wear.

Yes, motor sounds good

Yes, the motor sounds as if it's working, but the agitator doesn't move. But, if I move the agaitator with my hand a little, while it is supposed to be moving, it moves a little, as if it wants to move on it's own. But then it stops right away.

Belts

I would say check the belt 1st, just pull the machine away from the wall a bit and tilt it back, you could prop it up with a piece of wood. the belts are on the bottom. Look at the condition of the main belt that goes from the motor to the center drive pulley. It may be time to replace them anyway. Maytags use this belt as slippage when the machine is spinning and agitating, like a clutch, it's a special belt. If you replace it, get a genuine belt for it.

Wow - do you keep these pics hanging around just in case ? My luck huh ?

I had a load in the washer, not dirty stuff, now spinning, will tip it up in a few minutes.

So there are two belts, one for the pump, and the other is the main belt ? Why would it spin fine and not wash/agitate if it were the belt ? Weird...

It just stopped, back later...

Motor Carriage

Did you check the motor carriage, and that it travels on it's tracks and the spring tension is there?

Agitator

What about removing the agitator and seeing if the splines are stripped?

Do Maytags use agitator dogs? Our old 1988 Kenmore 90 series had its dogs strip out and the agitator would not move unless you applied downward force to get them to make contact. Once we replaced them it agitated properly again.

This machine does not, and even if it did, the lower part would still move I would think.

 

As for the issue at hand I can only see it being 1 of 3 issues (from minor to severe): Belt, Motor Carriage, Transmission.

 

I don't think it's the agitator splines as much because agitator would float up if not secured as well as making noise I would think.

LAT MT WASHER

Transmission problem, note the washer could be less than 10 years old, if so you can still get a free transmission from WP which includes a complete seal and tub mounting assembly, we need the serial # to date this washer.

SN info and more

Ok, I found that the bearing is binding, the one ? above the trans and below the tub I suspect. I took the cover off the trans, and when the shaft is moving to agitate, the bearing is binding. I suspect water got past the seal and ruined it. I filled the area around and above the bearing with oil to see what will happen. Not sure what I will do if it unsticks eventually as I'll have to think about water gettign in there again.

I wonder if that means it was made in Kansas ?
