Maytag Merchandiser - 1974!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Hey, Ben---

Thanks for going to the trouble to scan all this stuff.
Interesting reading. I have a DU600 I used for quite a while when I was living back home in Atlanta. I did not re-install it here in Roanoke.

It did a great job of washing dishes, however, I would take Maytag's advertising department to task about it's load capacity. I found it would not hold large bulky stock pots and my KAids will. Also, the KAids have the forced-air drying which is a feature that I really like.

I was amused that every single time the machine finnished a load, the spray arm was always in the exact same position, parallel to the front of the machine!

So that Dan Krumm was president of Maytag. What happened to the Maytag family? Was Fred the last one to run the company? Did the family OD on Maytag Cheese? Was somebody not able to have children? What caused the family to lose the company?

I have a copy of a Merchandiser from 98 or 99, right around the time the Neptune came out. The major story was 'Cleaning up Wall Street. My, how things changed in 10 years! :D

Tom - IIRC Fred Maytag II died suddenly in 1962 or 1963. He was the last Maytag to run the business - shortly after he died it fell into the hands of the board and the company was never the same. I think Geoff did some further research and found out that Fred II isn't even buried in Newton? I'm sure there are stories full of lore just waiting for the asking down in Jasper County.

Ben,

Thanks so much for the scans! Fun reading! Man it is hard to get over what happened to the Maytag name over time. So Sad.

Here is a fun 1970's Maytag Dishwasher commercial. Love the accent. Steve I think this is your machine.

Interesting reading. I remember when Maytag had the contest for the oldest working Maytag. The winning machine for the Cincinnati area was on display in Swallen's Wooster Pk. store for some time. Hard to believe it was as long ago as 1974; time just goes by too quickly.

Maytag!

Yes hard to believe that 1974 was 36 years ago!
What is so sad is that a company that held such high quality and standards is absolutly nothing now.
