Maytag Merchandiser - 1974!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I have a copy of a Merchandiser from 98 or 99, right around the time the Neptune came out. The major story was 'Cleaning up Wall Street. My, how things changed in 10 years! :D

Tom - IIRC Fred Maytag II died suddenly in 1962 or 1963. He was the last Maytag to run the business - shortly after he died it fell into the hands of the board and the company was never the same. I think Geoff did some further research and found out that Fred II isn't even buried in Newton? I'm sure there are stories full of lore just waiting for the asking down in Jasper County.

Ben,

Thanks so much for the scans! Fun reading! Man it is hard to get over what happened to the Maytag name over time. So Sad.

Here is a fun 1970's Maytag Dishwasher commercial. Love the accent. Steve I think this is your machine.

Interesting reading. I remember when Maytag had the contest for the oldest working Maytag. The winning machine for the Cincinnati area was on display in Swallen's Wooster Pk. store for some time. Hard to believe it was as long ago as 1974; time just goes by too quickly.

Maytag!

Yes hard to believe that 1974 was 36 years ago!
What is so sad is that a company that held such high quality and standards is absolutly nothing now.

Ah, I really miss the FC5 disposer we left behind when we sold our other house. If I find another one, I'm going to grab it.

Ben that dishwasher with the door kit is freaken me out ...
I would have to say that i would give up some of my machines to have one... that's how much i like it the machine is too cool it is sickening.
Thanks for posting i will be looking here for a while.

Great stuff!!

Ben, thanks for sharing this merchandising info! Love the shots of the storefronts featuring Maytag appliances. Some other cool 'accessories' in the user kitchen shots, too! I remember the big Eaton's store in downtown Montreal had the clear plastic demo dishwasher as part of their Maytag display area. I used to play with it until the sales people chased me out... What great information and memories it brings back!

MAYTAG DW NOISE LEVELS

The first MT DWs were a little quieter until they went to the unique but ill fated belt drive system. If they hadn't been so cheap and put a real V-belt drive with a spring loaded pivoting motor for proper belt tension they would have been much quieter and much more durable.

In 1949 the Fair Appliance Co. of Wausau sponsored an oldest Maytag contest for Marathon County. My mom's aunt and uncle submitted the 1917 Maytag that my great-grandparents bought new. Aunt Adela won 1st prize, she had a choice of either a new AMP, or a wringer. She choose an E2L because an automatic was considered a "water waster". She hated it, and traded it a year later for a Speed Queen wringer instead. I wish I had that 1917 Maytag today.

Thanks For The Scan

I found the information about Maytag's television advertising very interesting--especially the programs the company bought time on. "Mary Tyler Moore;" "M*A*S*H;" "Maude;" the various movie nights--a wonderful snapshot of a time when the three big networks still dominated television viewing.
By the way, my grandmother had a Maytag AMG washer; it ran for years without a problem. In the late 1960's, she replaced the Maytag with a Kenmore 500; it continued to give good service after we inherited the washer when my grandparents died. Loved it--best washer we ever owned (and we owned a Westinghouse Laundromat and a Kenmore 800 push-button series from the early 1960's that needed repairs all too often).

Thank you for posting that! I forgot all about "the dry look"! I still think those reverse-rack Maytag dishwashers were among the best ever made. And it's true, the best designed diswashers, in my experience, never needed adjustable racks.

Those S&S dudes, and the guys in ad before "The End&quo

Some of us older coots used to look like that--the sideburns. the hairdos, and we had girlfriends like the Jan Cooper "The Holiday Helper."

Speaking of being old, the scans are so big and clear--didn't even need the magnifier;'> My favorite is the 122 Tags from 1949 and the contest. Awesome.

I saved this for bedtime. What a great read. Thanks. Would love to read the articles that you and Geoff Delp published. Imagine two published washermen right here at Aworg.

How cool is that?!

Thanks Ben, for a great scan, what a great idea :-) A family business that sells a quality product, and they provide service IF you ever need it, with one simple phone call. alr2903

a publication that both Geoff Delp and I have published arti

"on here" in the Imperial Forum not in Maytag News. I got it. Too funny. As Emily Litella of old SNL would say, "Never Mind!"

Laughing hard and it's barely noon--a good day on the way, Ben.
