Hi all. I just bought a "reconditioned" maytag washer. Had a front loader and couldn't stand the 1 long or more wash cycles. Now maytag said they put a new tranny in but I'm questioning that. Because some of the time when agitating it will make this like squeak squeak squeak noise. that's the link to the noise. Also it's been spinning during drain every now and then and I don't lift the lid to activate that.
Last night I went to wash a small load of socks but forgot to put them in, came back and the washer was making a grind noise about 3 times during agitation. I couldn't figure out what it was. So when I put the socks into that small load the noise went away. What could be the deal?

There are people here who will champion the new WP machines.

Problem is, they won't open their wallets.

I hear the noise you refer to and my last direct drive whirlpool made the same noise, I just thought that was normal operating noise. It ran fine for years until I sold that house. As far as the grinding sound if you can catch that on video that might help.

Hi all. I will try and catch that grind noise when it happens, if it happens. Have done a few loads of laundry and no grind noise. But I bet if I do a small load empty ill get the noise.

Also the spin drain is buggin me. Someone said there is a kit to fix it inside the tranny. Is this a tranny issue or clutch issue? Also is this a good washer, being DD and all. I've come from a long line of FL since 2005. So to me this used, reconditioned maytag is new to me. Couldn't stand the hour long wash cycles of the FL or new TL anymore. Sold my Electrolux and bought this. I saw an old kenmore vintage set but they said the washer was leaking and the spin was slow. So I stayed away. Don't know if many parts for older washers are still around. But love the history, designs and no brain ease of use! Wished they still made them like they did in the 50's. the colors and everything!

spin drain is a tranny issue as the neutral drain assembly is in the tranny located within the spin gear on the underside of it you will see the parts responsible for the neutral drain dont let it bug u unless you are willing to scrap the transmission or buy a new tranny

Hi. It doesn't bug me. But what failed inside the tranny to make this start happening. I saw on sears parts direct that the tranny has a substitution. What improvements if any are made, or why do they change part numbers. I have the old tranny part number. Guess what I'm getting at is if it will need to be replaced soon. How long do these DD trannys last when new.

Most likely

On a Whirlpool built direct drive Maytag top loader. Your machine has a bad neutral pack if it is spin draining.
I could not access your video but when I have heard a loud grinding sound from this design it is usually a bad drive coupler.
In regards to how long this tranny will last. It is possibly the best TL transmission ever. They can last 20 years or more if not abused.

Hi thanks for that info. I took a chance on this machine because 1 I am impatient and 2 because I have another baby on the way and I was tired of waiting hours for my FL to do one wash. Went IMO a maytag dealer and they had this machine or two maytag Atlantis. Now while I liked the Atlantis I knew they were older and looked yellowing like my granny's teeth. Lol. I paid 250 for this "reconditioned" maytag. When I bought it they said it had a new tranny. Well it must be rebuilt or used because I checked under the tranny and it had some rust in spots. I thought to myself a new tranny would not have rust spots like that. Any who the video shows a squeak noise. I think it's the cabinet or rear feet are rubbing making that noise. The grinding happened to me when I had a small load going with no clothes in it. I heard it like three times but when I added clothes the noise stopped. I'll probably call maytag and see what he deal is with this tranny. Other than that it works and seems fine.

That's kind of what I thought. I set it for a small load and walked away to do something. When I filled it the next day to reproduce the sound on a small load it made the grinding noise. When I set it to a medium load an no clothes it didn't make the noise.

I also had a question. When the washer is washing or in operation I notice the house lights dim depending on what it's doing. Like when it stops draining and engages tos pin they dim for a second. Now I had a Electrolux ewfls70J and I don't remember it doing this. Also my breaker for the washer is 20 amps. How many amps is this maytag. And would higher amps do this to the lights. Because I think the Electrolux was like 12 amps or something small.

Warren, if by chance you need to have the lid open to see what is going on, you can easily get around the lid switch by detaching your left-side lid hinge and putting it into the "closed" position.

Hi all. I replaced the water level switch today with the new update one. But for the life of me I couldn't get the old hose off the outer tub, the part that sticks out. I kept pulling sometimes hard until it came loose. Can the outer tub part that the tube goes into ever break off or is it pretty secure. I felt like I was a little rough on it. Also the new hose didn't want to go over the nipple on the switch without a little force!

About the tranny issue. I watched today as it spin drained again. It seems to pause after the wash cycle, then I get a big click and the tub spins as it drains. It's eratic and sometimes it's the pre rinse or final spin or both, in all cycles. I think it's the tranny and will see about getting a new one.

Hi all! Yes sears ordered a second tranny as they said the new tranny was broke from factory. A day before sears came to install I got a call from sears executive offices and advised me that they didn't want to install the part and offered me a replacement. They said the two trannys and the tub, timer and water level switch have totaled more than the machine is worth.

I did go with the wt4870 as it uses a lot of water, thought the problem with the LGs exploding was fixed in this New Years model, but was I wrong! It still shakes violently and does not stop itself. It bangs the sides even on full loads. Am scared it would too explode. Called sears and they offered me a new washer up too 1000 dollars and 125 cash back. I chose the Samsung with aqua jet TL in platinum. Now reading some people had problems with the aqua jet feature, but then I read the manual well and the washer needs a calaborative process before Any wash is to be done. Maybe this is why people were having problems. They didn't read the fine print! I almost didn't see it.

A plus is the Samsung has metal brackets instead of plastics like the LG. love the sleek look of the Samsung. I think it's model has the numbers 456 in it.

Also the LG had to be defective. Not hot or warm washes! I chose hot and get ice cold, I chose warm and got ice cold. Maybe out of the 10 loads so far, one was Luke warm. What a joke. I wash my towels and bedding in hot, not ice cube cold water, what will that do? Stupid.
