Maytag N2LP ringer washer troubles

Howdy all:
I am the proud owner of my first Maytag ringer washer.It was working great it’s the best $15 purchase I ever have made. But after two days of washing, the agitator came loose from the shaft and left the coupling on the shaft spline. It is the original black agitator. I have tried everything to remove the coupling from this spline with no success. Any ideas or thoughts? Gear pullers, heat, penetrating oil. Nothing has worked so far. I don’t want to destroy it if I don’t have to as I would like to press it back into the agitator if possible. I suppose worst case, I destroy it and buy a replacement agitator. There are special tools for removing and reinserting

Splines on Maytag agitators. That and or you can try various other means but unless done with care you may cause damage.

Search archives of group using keyword "spline" for further information.

There are one or two sources for new splines and or complete agitators. Without proper equipment for removing and reinserting spline, I'd just go with buying new. But that is just me...

Only other cause of agitator floating up would be a worn/damaged stop ring. This is a some what easier issue to deal with as one just needs to replace that part. Again search of archives will give information.

When penetrating oil and gear pullers fail to work it's time to get out the Dremel and *carefully* split the drive block from the agitator shaft.

Been there done that a few times with the earlier automatics (same drive block as E J N wringers)

You could go through the hassle of sending the agitator to a couple of Amish places that still service these machines but once you factor in shipping costs both ways, the drive block, and labor for replacement, you're ahead of the game just replacing the agitator with a newer turquoise poly one available on Ebay.

You are actually better off with a new turquoise agitator for your Maytag wringer.

Maytag changed agitator design by a adding a "cup" that helps keep water from getting down into the seals. Look at the agitator in link to eBay auction above and compare to yours, you'll see the difference.

My washer came with same black agitator as yours, but also bought the newer turquoise that is used as "daily driver". Better to use all means possible in keeping water from seeping down into transmission. This prolongs the dreaded day when the thing will have to be stripped down for a cleaning out and grease change.
