Maytag Neptunes

This pair appears to be the 'first generation' Neptunes. My question - are there any problems inherent in their design? Seems like I've read of problems / complaints about some of the later models, but I'm not sure if what I've heard is applicable to these models. These appear to be in very good (cosmetic) condition and are right around the corner from me.

Maytag Neptunes

I purchased the Maytag Neptunes in May 1999, which is when Maytag came out with the second generation Neptunes. Features "auto-temp" and they changed the labeling on the buttons for type of fabrics: whites, colors, delicates and hand washables. Water temp buttons stayed the same; added a button for stain cycle. Not sure what other differences there are. Have not had any problems with my Neptunes. After washing is completed, I dry out the boot and leave the door open until the next time I do laundry.

by the looks of the control panel with the extra button under the start button, this would appear to be the 4000 series, second generation of this control panel, and by this point all the glitches of the 3000 series has been worked out.....actually a very reliable machine.....my cousin still has mine and working flawlessly.....my preference has always been the 5500/6500/7500 digital versions.....

one thing I missed from the 3000 was the turbine wind up of the motor during spin....like a jet taking off!....

a little high price for their age......I paid no more than 100.00 or less for a single unit, I got 8 all together for under 500.00 total, and mine are a lot newer....see if you can work out a deal.....

these may need bearings by now too!

I never liked the Neptunes at all. I worked for one of the Maytag stores when I lived in Orlando Florida and the day the first one arrived, I hated it.No windows? What is Maytag trying to hide? Their rep.wouldn' tell me. All he would say was how they had suposedly had chosen families try them out for 15 years before Maytag decided to unvail them. By 2000,we already had hundreds ofcomplaints and service calls. I made a deal with Disney's cruise ships selling them 120 of the stacked units and two years later, they had a severe fire on board from one of the units failing and the sparks ignighted a blaze causing thousands of dollars in damage. I left after hearing Whirlpool took over and planned on closing all of the Maytag franchises like ours. I went toHome Depot and sold the hell out of the GE (made by Frigidaire) sets. Hundreds of them. Customers came in drobes to buy the Neptunes and I had documented reports on thousands of issues regarding their failures as well as a suit growin by the thosands against Maytag and their horrific customer service on these pieces of shit. I had a set years ago for about 3 weeks and gave them to Goodwill.

I guess that's why a few people were still buying wringer washers into the early 1970s, even though top-load washers with solid metal lids had dominated the market for 30 or more years.

There is a floating vibration damper suspended inside the door frame that is tuned to counteract vibration at spin speeds, specifically the frequency generated at 1000 RPM.  Just like in the Petronas Twin-Towers in Kuala Lumpur that have a gigantic mass damper installed on the higher floors to counteract building sway.

I would offer them less $'s and see if they budge on price. Get them if they do.

It doesn't specify "working" but let's assume they do. The dryers didn't have a problem that I know of. I agree the price is excessive; offer $100 less and maybe settle for $50~75 less.

The first-gen washers had a BIG problem, the doorlatch waxmotor that burned out the computer. It took 3 revisions to fix that, but if that one works surely it has the revision.

Drainage revisions were made to the boot, original tended to cultivate mildew. Hopefully that has been revised too. Any FL, it's wise to towel the boot and leave the door ajar. I've never had a problem with my 1999 Frigiwhite. I wanted the Maytag, had a slant tub but didn't have a window. I kinda dodged a bullet on account of that. I grew up with Westinghouse FLs and to me a FL has a window, period.
