Maytag Netpune randomly fills

Once every couple months, we open up our MAH7500AWW to start a load of wash and find the tub full of water. I would say it is filling to about the wash level or a bit less. It has been happening off and on for years.

Is it leaking valves -- should I worry about them failing? Or could it be some weird electronic control glitch?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Diagnosis:

Pull the plug for a while between uses.  The cause is not electrical if the problem continues.

Then, shut off the water faucets for a while between uses.  The cause is leaky valves in the machine if the problem stops.

me i think it might be time to consider replacing your washer with a good old fashion top load washer has it might be the electronic control board failling

my 1998 neptune 3000 has done that 4 times in the last couple years i have had it-i suspect the inlet valve is a little seepy at times,perhaps when the water pressure is high...will take the valve out and have a look if it gets worse.

That Neptune is a fantastic machine. I have the MAH7500 and it is a very capable washer which I would put up against just about any front loader on the market for function and ease of repair. As Martin will attest to, the out of balance system is far superior to many of the systems used today. It will just get to the business of spinning out without all the 'tuning' bs.

I am about 90+% certain you have a failing water valve. Not difficult to change with just a little coaching from the peanut gallery here if you don't already have a handle on it. The serial number will help tell which valve is appropriate for your machine. This is something you should get on as I have seen the water level from a leaky valve fill the tub enough while in standby to actually pop the door open.

Here's mine complete with windowed door on the dryer. Soon as I locate a matching electric 7500 dryer, I'll overhaul it and put the windowed door on it. The old dryer will then go to the same friend that has the original 4000 washer I gave him...

just joking....but seriously, if its something as simple as a water valve, an easy diagnostic and repair.....and Drew is right, theres no fuss about these machines, uses plenty of water, and balances on the mark....

my numbers are climbing, I need updated pics, I have 6 so far at my partner's house, plus the 4 at my house....I've had minimal issues with mine....2 bearing jobs and a clogged inlet screen.....

careful with the serial numbers, I have one with a number that uses a certain valve, but the replacement part is not the right one.......could be in the middle of a series change.....but the correct part is now installed....if you have to replace it, just make sure to have a pic ready to match it up, just to be sure...

Yeah Malcolm, that window is a downfall, but I have watched it so many times with the door open, or the demo door, that I know whats going on......I do have to work on getting the plexiglas installed.....

Leaking water inlet valves aren't just exclusive to the Neptunes, our GE top loader (circa 2003) had the same problem. I solved it by turning off the water supply. Removing both hoses from the taps. Draining them, then filling the hoses with "lime-a-way" and reattaching the hoses to the taps without turning the water back on for a few hours. Then I turned the water back on and started the washer to blow out the mixture. Worked like a charm and no more leaks/seeping.
On a side note, I also drained the hot water heater to get rid of sediment that occasionally builds up at the bottom of the tank.

Are those all model 5500 washers or do you have 6500's too?

everything I have is a 5500 series....I thought about the 6500 if one came along, but the internal heater doesn't raise it any more than what my water heater is already set at, so it would be a waste and not used....

I have came across one set of 7500, one, too much asking price, and two, it would throw off my lineup, but would not say no if one did come along....

the StainBrain is an interesting feature....

like I said, can never have too many......

IIRC Maytag had a Stain Brain on it's website back then.

They may have....this is linked to the washers controls and functions, and programs the machine to clean that particular stain(s).....

almost like a programmed washer.....but this is a foolproof method to treat stains, as well as fabric choices being washed....it has pros and cons

Update: I swapped the valve for a new one this week. It's really amazing how easy it is to work on these machines. 6 screws and you have access to the front and top without even pulling the unit out. One screw for the valve and the wires just pull off and push back on!

It's too early to be sure it fixed my issue. I changed the hoses and the hammer arrestors at the same time. So, the hot water pipes no longer band! I also noticed the Hot fill is faster now, so I'm inclined to think something was wrong with the old one.

the are really simple to work on for up front service-ability......even with a piece of electrical tape you can put a belt on from the front.......very few times did I ever have to pull mine away from the wall...

as an extra measure, add screen washers at the taps as well....can never be too safe!
