Hello
I have been a member on and off for several years ! Never posted before but need
Help locating parts ? I purchased a model 142 maytag washer and dryer that was listed
Thru this site several months ago ! I was going to use them for display in my garage to match classic cars I collect but think I would like them to work ? There is a service guy I use but he said parts are no longer available ?? I need a agitator rebuild kit and perhaps a tub for what I believe is a 1958 model 142?? Any help would be appreciated !
By the way always enjoy the pictures if these collections I love my cars
And the machines make for a cool addition !
Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob

Your service tech is right in the sense that many parts for these machines generally aren't available through normal channels any more, but they are often still available if you're patient and willing to look around a bit. I don't know what an agitator rebuild kit is, unless it's the spline adapter. Those do turn up, but you may wish to consider replacing your agitator with a black plastic Powerfin agitator instead. I have an A700 that used the same Bakelite agitator that your machine does, but mine was missing when I got it. I'm determined to track down an original for special occasions, but for daily use I have the black Powerfin. Just be aware that those Bakelite agitators are very hard to come by these days, so be careful with it.

One of the first things you're going to want to get ahold of is the correct parts manuals for your machines. As with classic cars, knowing what part number you need makes finding things much easier. I have those manuals, but I'm away from home at the moment, so I can't send them to you until I get back in October. But someone else might have copies to share before then.

The tub you need will most likely have to come from another machine. Certain models of Maytag's stacked washer and dryer units used a tub that fits nicely, but you'll need to search through the archives to find the reference for that. If you're determined and patient you will succeed, so just stick with it.

Restoring A Maytag 142 Washer

Hi Bob, parts are not going to be your biggest problem, Maytag kept most of the major parts that your machine used in use for long time after your machine was built, some as late as 2006 when helical drive MTs stopped production.

David has many good suggestions, but the real question is whether you are willing to put the time and effort into restoring this washer, or can find someone that has the time and qualifications to do it. At our shop to do a complete rebuilding of a washer like this you will spend something between $1000 and $2000 in labor to do major mechanical restoration and if you do an internal cosmetic restoration like David has done on several of his MTs you could double the labor costs.
