Maytag Portable. Any good?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Shannon, I've gone through the service manuals I've downloaded over time. I cannot find the WC502, but I can find the undercounter version, the WU502. The 1984 service manual has the WU502. There's also a 1984 Sales brochure.

Hard Water Deposits

So I ran it today and it cleaned great, the issue here is our hard water (about 15-20 grains hard in most places). I have a lot of hard water deposits left on the dishes and I’m thinking this is because of the lack of a rinse aid dispenser. What is required to add a dispenser? I am using Cascade Complete powder. Any insight on better detergent or what would be best to remedy this issue would be appreciated!

Hard Water deposits

Hi Shannon, CC Powder is not a good detergent with water that hard, yes a rinse aid dispenser will mask the water spot problem, but you really need a better detergent, or a home water softener, or you can add phosphates to the CCP, it can also help if you put the dishes in really covered with oils and lots of sugars etc, but it is hard to get enough of these soils in a load on a regular basis.

I would try a TOL tablet in the main wash dispenser and also fill the open cup with the CCP and see how that does.

Tablets

Thanks John, I was hesitant to use tablets as I’ve seen some people say that they don’t work well with these older machines. With my newer machines I’ve always had very good luck with finish quantum tablets. Would that be OK to use in this machine?

Shannon, I would try the Quantum tablets again and put the Cascade powder in the prewash dispenser. Also use the temp boost option to extend the main wash period beyond the default 13 minutes. I'm also adding Finish Booster (for hard water) to the prewash or Lemi-Shine detergent booster in the main wash dispenser along with the detergent pod. If hard water deposits are showing up in the dishwasher, then once-a-month run either Lemi-Shine Dishwasher Cleaner or Finish Dishwasher cleaner. When using those machine cleaners, start on regular wash cycle or the low/energy/light soil dial setting and turn on the temp booster option too.

Rinse Aid Kit

So I was searching through the service manual and I found the part number for adding the rinse aid dispenser (or rinse conditioner as they call it). The Maytag kit part number is 9-1572, but I can’t seem to find it, I’m assuming it’s not made anymore or there is an updated part number that I don’t know. I’d like to have the option of using rinse aid and it seems like a pretty simple addition. Anyone who has the parts or could direct me towards them would be greatly appreciated.

Dispenser Kit Ordered

I have the dispenser on order. (Thanks Melvin!) I will get it installed ASAP. In the meantime today I’ll run it through a wash with the finish tabs and wash booster. I’ll let you guys know the results!

Cleaning Better

Ran the beast with the Lemi Shine Boost and quantum tab in the main wash dispenser. Pretty much solved the hard water issues and things came out film free. Only issue was not everything came clean, but I only ran the energy saver cycle as I wanted to test it out. It was pretty well loaded but not exactly a BobLoad, maybe a BabyBobLoad LOL, but that is a title only he can bestow and this was more of a test for the hard water deposits. This could also be because I haven’t perfected loading this machine either. In any case I will run a normal load tomorrow and see how it goes. I haven’t attempted the pots and pans load yet either. One pan from tonight didn’t wash well and a plate and silicone baby tray had some leftover bits as well. I’ll leave some pictures of the load and results here.

Runs Smooth

I know some people mentioned that these are often squeaky due to the belt design but I am happy to report that this machine has no odd noises whatsoever, the washing and especially draining action are noisy to be sure, but it seems to be in top performing condition. Thanks again for helping me resolve my hard water issues as well. Everything has been coming out crystal clear! Now I just have to get a day to pick up that GE 1200. Also for anyone wondering the little man is doing good but unfortunately my family has a rare genetic seizure disorder (1in 100,000 people). We knew it was a possibility he could inherit it and he unfortunately has, so any prayers or positive thoughts sent our way would be appreciated. It’s usually kept under control with medication for the first year of life and resolves itself afterwards so hopefully we can get him all set with everything this week.

Shannon, you've got mega prayers being sent out for Oliver as well as you & your wife. The pic you have for your avatar, is that another child or Oliver.

Oh, and glad to here the Maytag is running so well!!! Glad to hear the hard water issue suggestions are working. I'm using the same products on my new Bosch.

Daughter

That is a picture of Me and my daughter Lilyana, taken before Oliver was born. We have newborn photos being taken next weekend so I’ll probably update my avatar photo afterwards. Thank you for the prayers Bob, it means more than you know!

Thank you everyone!

The little guy has been doing pretty good, we are just waiting on these meds for him to get started, but no seizures for a couple days now so that’s really good. Also as an update, I got the rinse aid dispenser kit for the Maytag today, so hopefully I can get it installed soon. Pictures of the progress and installation to come soon!
