Maytag problem

I have a maytag A482. Problem is washer is not agitating or spinning. Replaced belts, motor is new, carriage is OK. On closer inspection, I cannot turn the spinner (big weighty thing underneath the drum) by hand past a certain point. So if I cant turn it by hand how can the belt? What is the problem with this? Is there a bearing that is shot and can be replaced? Or is the washer toast? Appreciate all replies!!

Hi Mark,

 

Unless I'm mistaken, the large pulley you are referring to has the tub brake assembly in it.   As you are turning it you are most likely releasing the tub brake, that;s why it only turns so far.

 

Please further explain what happens with the washer.   You set the timer and start it, water flows and then what?   Does the motor start but nothing at all happens?   What happens when you start the washer on a drain/spin?   Do you have the front panel off while you are trying all this so you can see what's happening inside?

Thanks Kevin: Yes I have the front panel off so I can see what is going on. When I start it, the water goes in, and the motor comes on but the tub doesnt agitate. I stop it since I dont want it to burn the belt. The spinner (again I dont know what that is called other than it is the big weighty thing - transmission? - under the tub) is stuck in one position (to the left as you look at the tub from the front). I can reach in and move the weight by hand. But when I get underneath and move the big pulley, I can move the pulley, but I cannot move it past the same point. So if I cant move the pulley by hand, the motor cant either. Again, I can reach in the tub area and move the weight by hand, but not when I try to move it using the pulley. And I can get the pump going to pump the water out. Hope that this clarifies things. Thanks.

Pulley Direction

Which direction are you trying to turn the pulley?

From the top of the machine, the pulley should go clockwise to agitate and counter-clockwise for spinning.

Counter-clockwise may not be easy to turn by hand. But clockwise I imagine would pose a little resistance.

Clockwise. Didnt try to turn counter-clockwise. But why does it get stuck in the same place? and cant move it any further by hand?

It not check it out, there may be some helpful info there.   Does your washer have the same transmission as the one pictured in the thread?

Cant tell for sure. But based on the three things indicated. It sounds like the transmission is toast.

Hi map79z28, the spinny thing is the transmission. The transmission isn't supposed to move/spin until the washer is spinning or draining. It is normal for the transmission not want to move when you try to wiggle it. The brake is holding it in place, and the brake will release when the machine goes into spin. You can try to release the brake by turning the drive pulley counter-clockwise. It is a bit tough to turn and make it spin, as you have to overcome the brake pressure. Once you stop trying to spin the pulley, the brake will reset by itself, or if you turn it clockwise a bit that will put the brake back on.

As for whats wrong? I am not sure, I too am stumped. I am thinking the motor pulley or drive pulley could have some how come off or got loose. The transmission could be a problem too. Did you buy genuine Maytag belts? I am stumped, the only way I would be able to know what is 100% going on is if I was there in front of the machine.
