What's in a handle?
Eddie, yep - two models of the original cabinet AMP's did have a method to control water level. On the A2MP and A3MP, the user would find a small handle inside the lid handle. Casted into the handle are the water level positions "Low, Medium, Normal." You'd slide the lever to the appropriate position for the wash.
The original AMP would fill a complete tub, and the A4MP and 121P were timed fill machines with wringer post agitators.
Kelly - the AMP was the only Maytag to have the float can. I suspect it is actually a chrome-dipped, very thin gauge copper float. Starting with the water level control machines, the agitator was slighted modified to house the rubber diaphragm inside the agitator which would push up on the cap during fill as pressure would build inside the agitator.
