Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Oooh

Pretty. Gorgeous control panels and what looks like the first iteration of the orbital (short, quick stroke) transmissions. Love that agitator.

That dryer is outside my office window right now. Literally.

This set's a little too new for my taste, but it is nice.

Maytag 512A washer and dryer

We had that exact same washer and gas dryer in our first house. We purchased them in March 1986. I think the agitator in the washer is a replacement for the original one as those models still had the older "Pitman drive". The washer had the green power fin agitator in it.

We used that set until November 2005 we they finally started to give up. But I can tell you this the 512A's we had were a work horse. We washed and dried everything from pillows to what ever in those machines. Like a Timex "took a beating but keeps on ticking". When I went to Home Depot to get a new set they could not believe a washer lasted more then 10 years. Of course by then Maytag had went to the dogs so we got GE's this time. Not as sturdy as our old Maytags.

Power fin 12 agitator and orbital transmission

After I sent the Email about the Pitman drive transmission the washer could be an "in-between" machine where they changed the agitator and the transmission to the orbital but the rest of the machine stayed pretty much the same. They use to do that sometimes in the old Maytag company when they were changing models. We purchased ours in March 1986. I think 5 years later around 1991 is when the transmission changed along with the agitator and the black control panel.
