Maytag Washer A208 No Agitate - Please Help

We have a Maytag Washer A608 in good condition. It spins and removes water fine but does not agitate. With the belts removed I can turn the large center pulley in both directions. One way spins the drum and the other direction agitates as it should. The motor turns fine in the spin direction but does not run in the reverse direction. I tried several different locations on the timer and none activate the agitator. Are there diagnostics I can do to determine if there is a problem with the motor or the problem is some other electrical component? If I can determine it's the motor, I can take it to a local electric motor shop to see if repair is possible. If it isn't the motor, which component would be the most suspect and how can I test it?

This video explains how to test the motor with jumper wires on a newer Maytag but even though the wires are the same color as ours, the connections on the connection block on our motor are all in a line and have no markings.
Is it safe to perform this test on ours using the same color wires?

Timer Spring Location

I did a little more checking and agree it must be the timer. It looks like finding another timer at any price much less a reasonable price will be next to impossible. I decided I had nothing to loose so after a bit of a struggle managed to disassemble the timer. The points have been cleaned up but a spring jumped out when it opened up and I am having a hard time figuring out exactly how it needs to be re-installed. Can anyone help?

I have a brand new in box timer for a later A407 made by Kingston. Mine takes a Mallory. Will this also work in an A208?? Part # is 204889

Maytag Washer Timers

Kingston and Mallory timers are interchangeable if they are the same PT #, the Kingston timers have a better feel when you set them, the Mallory timers are more dependable.

 

This was one of MTs biggest *  reliability  problems in the 60s through the 80s, they finely got better in the 1990s when they booted out more of the crappy electrical parts from 2nd rate suppliers.

 

* Westinghouse W&D motors, Roberetshaw inlet valves in the 70s, Robertshaw dryer timers in the 70s, we used to catch quite an earful when we had to tell a customer that her 3 YO A606 needed a new motor at a total cost of around $100 back in 1976 after they had already paid a $100 premium to buy the washer in the first place.

A608 Timer Problem

I apologize for the mistype in the subject of my first two messages. It should have been Maytag A-608 Washer with permanent press. I tried to change it but couldn't without an upgrade.

The number on our timer is Maytag 2-04476-3. It was manufactured by Kingston.

At first glance they look quite similar but the wiring connections are all different.

The good news is these pictures show the location of the spring I was having trouble with.

Fixed

I managed to get the timer reassembled today and installed on the machine. Everything seems to be working as it should. Note - it won't agitate without a load of water or jumping the water level switch.

You are right; the water level switch has to be satisfied before agitation will begin.
