My next door neighbor, Rosanne, has complained for years ever since she traded in her 1979 Maytags for a new HE set of Hotpoint machines. A few weeks ago she came to me saying she had enough and she wanted an older Maytag set again. The new Speed Queen TC5 is too expensive and she just wanted a classic Maytag again.

Well, today is her lucky day! I spotted this beautiful Maytag set that a family was selling for a mere $100! The sweetest elderly man used these since they were new. He could no longer manage to stay in his home of 65 years so the house is going on the market.

These machines are near immaculate and even have the original Maytag Repairman stickers on them.

According to the serial numbers, the washer was manufactured November, 1993 and the dryer October, 1993.

I can’t wait to get them cleaned up and tested. This will be such a surprise for my neighbors!

Jon, nice find - and nice of you to think of your neighbor!

This is basically the pair that's in my mother's house right now (actually the washer is one step up, and is a DC Plus). It's looking like I'm going to let the Estate Sale folks sell them for me and I'll carry my Speed Queen pair with me.

Thanks!

She is so excited about these. I tested the washer today and it runs beautifully. Quiet and no leaks. Very clean underneath. Inside has the typical muck but I took time to pull the tub out and give everything a good scrub. Beautiful and shiny white porcelain basket shows very little use.

I’ll start on the dryer tomorrow. The vent was run vertically so that means lots of lint. I have a parts kit coming so I can swap out rollers and belts and have it running smoothly.

These are the sweetest neighbors and I’m so happy to be doing this for them!

Inside has the typical muck

A cycle or two of hot water with a good dose of bleach should help with muck.

That washer can also be upgraded to the later style Load Sense agitator- BTW

Your neighbors owe you big time.

Nor knocking, but I always cringe when I see the crappy old water supply hoses still attached and flopping around or stuffed under the lid on a nice vintage machine.

De-mucked

The washer had a musty smell to it. Honestly, it’s so east to pop the top on these, remove the tub ring, basket, balance ring, etc. why not give it a good scrub? Barkeepers Friend is a wonderful thing for these porcelain surfaces and gets them looking new again with minimal elbow grease required. I still do a hot bleach load after to sanitize and kill any odors that might linger.

The washer looks brand new and installed it for them today. Waiting in new rollers and glides for the dryer. Really a good and solid set.

Why?

Is all this muck a result of using cold water or is this how they all look over time regardless of how they are used? I take such care in how I use my machine because I don't want to think my clothes are washed in that stuff. I wouldn't know how to begin to take my machine apart to look for that nor would I want to. I'm afraid I'd never get it back together again.

You're a good neighbor Jon. My neighborhood is one that people stick to themselves. They are friendly and wave but that's about it. My husbands pride and joy is his yard and people will comment as they are walking by if he is out but that's about it. I can't imagine anyone doing this where we live.

Reply # 14. Bad Washing Habits

We replaced a KM 1987 DD Pair 2 years ago that came from a home where the two guys did their own laundry and bought these machines new.

I could not believe my eyes how clean these machines were, even under the plastic cover there was not one tiny speck of dirt, None on the inside of the upper part of the outer tub, not a trace on or under the agitator, they looked like new.

I do know that they washed all their linens etc in hot water used plenty of good detergent with frequent bleach use.

I took apart my 1971 LKM washer for a 2nd rebuilding after around 30 years use in our home and there was nothing in the outer floor or on the inside walls of the outer tub to clean, it was spotless, and this machine has a Suds-Saver and the wash water was often filthy when reusing the water to wash my work pants etc and I always used liquid fabric softener in shirts and pants.

If you use common sense your laundry and your machines will be clean, If you want to test your washing effectiveness take a clean damp shirt out of the washer and something like a hand towel etc and put them in separate Zip-Lock bags and put them in a dark closet for a week or so, if the items remain odor free after a few weeks you are probably doing a pretty good job cleaning your washing.

Most newer machines will be condemned by their careless owners simply because they didn’t use warm or hot water and only used cold which caused a lot of muck to build up on the surfaces of the inner and outer tub. This is what the outer tub looked like when I pulled the tub out of my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII washer, hardly any buildup at all on the outer tub surfaces.
