Hello, I was speaking with a friend of mine this morning on the phone. She said that she has a Maytag washer that is about 10 yrs old. She said that periodically--about every couple of months or so she will remove clothes from the washer after a cycle to find a dark streak on an article of clothing. She said it looks like oil. It is never a spot...always a streak or a line. She can remove it by working on it by hand for awhile but it is annoying. She said that a friend told her it would be very expensive to repair. She said it happens only once in awhile so difficult to pinpoint the origin. She has no idea what is causing this. Any ideas? Has anyone heard of this happening before?

To me, it sounds like fabric softner that has built-up over the years inside the agitator. Have her remove the softner cup (& lint filter if it has one) and look down inside the agitator. It'll probably be full o' crap. That happens.

that happens to folks who are not cleaning their machines. You are right. Just check this scenario and see what happens. It is not oil, can be sure of that.

Something else.......................

My Kenmore did that, I was told it was because I was washing too much in cold. I ran a couple of hot cycles through it, changed my laundry routine to use warm cycles and it hasn't happened since.

Re: In case you might not know:

The Set Screw is located towards the bottom of the Agitator, between the Fins and it uses a Socket Wrench Tool to loosen/tighten it for removing/installing the Agitator.

Good Luck with this, I hope that is all that is wrong with the great older Maytag Washer.

Peace and Good Maytag Laundrying times, Steve

My mom had a 1976 Maytag A606? that everytime after the final spin little gray chunks would come out from the agitator. I pulled the agitator out and the tub underneath was completely covered with fabric softner build up. Took a brush and a little detergent and elbow grease and it came right out.

thank you!

Thank you so much for your responses! I told my friend about what you guys said. She replied that she has never cleaned out the lint filter...so I can just imagine what it looks like!! I'm sure that's got to be it!
