I have two washers that must go one is a A606 that I’ve used until a couple weeks ago. I’ve had it since 1996. Lots of new parts within the last 5 years or so. New motor, timer, water pump, and belts. The transmission leaks and I’m getting tired of cleaning the underneath. The second one is an A 312 that I got to replace the 606. A very clean washer but it leaks water from the tub. So I had to get a newer washer because I needed one now. If anyone wants parts I’m willing to part them out. They will soon go to the scrap yard. That will be a sad day!

It’s leaking at the tub where the clamp holds the two pieces together. I took the clamp off cleaned up the rust on the tub and the seal but it still leaks.
 
 
Pitman is helical drive.  Orbital is helical drive.

Pitman and orbital refer to the gearing *inside* the transmissions ... not the method of driving them.

Helical refers to the spiral groove cut into the drive shaft that extends down under the base, onto which the belt-driven pulley is mounted and climbs up and down via the spiral to release the brake and rotate the entire assembly for spin, or engage the brake and drive only the transmission input shaft for agitation.
 
Maytag Transmission

That transmission you show in the last picture, does it still work? That looks like exactly what I need to replace. If so I would love to get it. And I am also looking everywhere to find the brake assembly wrench. Does anyone have any idea where I can find one? I am planning to buy the Maytag tub wrench. Also my ceramic tub cover has rust at the injector fill retainer tab. I am planning to remove the rust and try to repair that area with marine epoxy.

Brake assembly

Mine came off with no trouble using a board for leverage, and 2 clamps as in the pictures.

Notice the solid jaws of the clamps are against the ribs on the brake unit so when you push on the clamps you're pushing against the ribs. Also notice the little shim under each solid jaw to allow it to clamp against the solid part of the brake.[this post was last edited: 4/28/2020-16:12]

Yes it works good, the only problem with that washer was the tub leak. If you want it please let me know I’m getting rid of it tomorrow.
 
that's a great idea but I think the wood would have to have a hole the size of the shaft to go thru and I think the brake may be recessed in the cabinet too much to contact the base of the C clamps? I used a vice grips cover with a piece of wood and wd40 and had to hammer to death to get it to turn with my hands. Such a large diameter threaded part is so hard to get to turn without good leverage.
 
Steven you may be right

about using a board with a clearance hole for the shaft. I do have boards with holes in them around here. Too bad I didn't think of taking a picture at the time.

Sounds like you got the brake off okay. I'd like to see how you do with repairing that rusty area.

And I hope somebody can take those machines before they get thrown away.
