Maytag Wringer Washer Agitator's

Can anyone please help me in finding out what years Maytag put what color/type of agitator in their E, J and N's? I know they began with aluminum then went to red Bakelite and then black Bakelite and then black vinyl and then blue vinyl. I just don't know what years had what agitator in them. Any help on this identification from you fine collectors of Maytag Wringers would be greatly appreciated. Ted told me there was a thread in the archives about this but for life of me I can't find it.

I have one of each of the agitators in my collection but am having an N restored that came with a red one with a manufacture date of 1962 on it ??????? I may have read the serial number wrong because both Ted and I think it is older than 62 since it has the red agitator and the old decal on the front. Thanks very much for any help you can give me.

Here is a pic of it at the Amish shop where it is being rebuilt. The rolls are bad but I found nearly new ones on ebay and the lid will be replaced since it has a ding in the edge and will be painted with the washer in the spray booth. The porcelain tub is in perfect condition but the painted parts have some flaws as you see in the pic. Thanks again for any help you can give me on this agitator information.

Here is a rough chronology of wringer agitators:
The agitator that one finds in a machine is never a particularly good indicator of the year the machine was made. These agitators were SO easy to switch out that whenever there was an issue with an agitator a serviceman would often switch out the bad one with whatever color/type he had in the truck.

Aluminum through 1949
Red Bakelite 1950 - 1954ish
Black Bakelite 1955 - 1964
Black Polypropylene 1965
Turquoise Polypropylene 1966 - 1982

I appreciate this information very much. I believe the date of manufacture is only determined by the serial number and letters right? I think I may have made an error in reading the number because it only had numbers and 1 letter (I think LOL). Thanks again for your information. I will print it for posterity

I have a 1954 E2LP that I love, but kind of wish it were an N just for the porcelain tub!

Mine looks just like that one. I just wish Grandma didnt scour the front label and model/serial numbers off with cleanser and steel wool. I have the original black bakelike agitator, so it probably is closer to the '55 vintage. I did print off a front name plate logo from the internet, glued it on, but it still doesnt look right. But it still works like a charm and is so quiet when running.

Well,

like the idiot I am I didn't write the serial number down and it is torn into pieces now being rebuilt at the Amish shop. I swear it was a few numbers followed by an R but I could be wrong. I will be going down soon to check on the process and find out then. I do know that in the models with the label both red or blue that the serial number is stamped into the skirt while the newer models have silver labels on the back with the numbers on them. I have the list of dating information that Ted gave me and according to it the N was made in Sept of 62.

I will post the serial number when I find what it is. Thanks again for all of your help. I am anxious to add it to my collection when it is done. Just have some curiosities about it's age.

please tell me a little about this washer!

My husband and I just came across one of these and had it thrown in the deal on some things we were purchasing. ours looks identical to the one pictured here and has a blue agitator. I can't find a serial # and the logo decal is missing as well as the lid. I was told that it works but am trying to find out more about it and how it works - manual, etc. please help!

If your washer is round it is an N model. Depending upon what year it was manufactured it will have the serial number either stamped into the skirt or if it is a later model it will have had a silver label on the back with the serial number stamped into that. The older red labeled/wringer release bar units all had the numbers stamped into their skirts. The early turquoise trim ones also had turquoise stickers on their back side with the serial number stamped into the skirt. Later turquoise trimmed models would have had their serial number (some for some reason did not have a serial number stamped into this label ???) stamped into the silver label on the back. I hope this helps. If this information is wrong please someone let me know here.

Before we can go too far we need to know what kind of machine you have, and there's a couple of machines on this thread.

Here's a comparison of all the Maytag wringers that you are likely to have. Let us know if it's an E, J, or N.

Usually the serial number (to establish age of machine) is stamped into the steel, but may not be conspicuous because of rust. At the very end of production, they started putting the serial number on an aluminum foil sticker (which should be very conspicuous).

Here are the usual places to look for the serial numbers on the E and N model (I don't have a picture of the J, but it should be just like the N.
