Hello! First time poster checking to see if anyone has any feedback on my beloved dishwasher. There is a slight burning smell after the tub fills with water, it heats up but when the motor should be kicking on, it doesn't make any noise or drain of course.

I did verify there isn't anything melted on the heating element.

Any thoughts on how to fix it or find parts? I did check the Maytag OEM parts website but there's very little stock left given her age.

Thanks!

So the motor hums but there is no circulation or drain? Most likely the motor bearing has seized or the pump has seized. You can open up the bottom panel, take the belt off, the spin the motor pulley and the pump pulley to see where the problem is. As far as parts availability, depends on what the problem is and if it's repairable or not. Someone may have some NOS parts laying around, otherwise a donor machine might be in store. Hopefully you can pinpoint the problem!.

Edit

So I’m not super knowledgeable about early Maytag dishwasher models, this may be the orignal sideways mounted pump rather than the later belt driven pump and motor. In anycase the problem is the still the same. Either the motor bearing has seized or something is jamming the pump. Pictures of the sump area and underneath the machine would clarify.

If it’s the later belt, drive dishwasher

The belt is probably just broken. The belts were not very durable on these dishwashers and eventually just snap.

If it’s the earlier one, you’ve got a big job on your hand as something has gone wrong with the motor and pump assembly which is in the back.

A picture of the inside of the dishwasher would tell us which one you have.

Thanks, everyone! I added an inside picture. The motor does hum but it doesn't engage to drain the water. It's one of the early models that doesn't have a belt and the motor is sideways in the back right corner and difficult to get to.

From your description of the problem it is likely the motor or the start relay. You'll need to download the service manual from this site in order to check/repair this.

The pump could also be jammed, but you would probably have heard a noise as the pump suddenly stopped. Someone mentioned a bearing failure, but those usually occur over a period of time. Typically you'll hear a screeching sound as the bearing wears (either from a water leak, or dried up lubrication).

If it's just the relay that's a pretty simple fix. If it's the motor or pump that is more complicated and does require removing the machine from it's installed position. Study the manual thoroughly before attempting the repair. If you are mechanically inclined you should be able to handle it (as long as parts are available).

Good luck and keep us posted.

Early Maytag dishwasher

If you hear home from the motor, it could be one of several things as Alan mentioned.

It could be a bad motor winding could be a bad relay could be a bad timer. It’s also likely that the pump has locked up these used to seal ball, bearing next to the water seal often water would get into it, and it would just rust and seize in between uses.
