McCain's poll numbers are tanking because of this $800 billion bailout, and now he wants to "postpone" the debates.

And how does our media frame this story? "Obama caught off guard!"

We're tanking in the poll numbers? TIME OUT!!

He did seem to be caught off guard when McCain pranced onto the TV machine and made his "announcement" when he hadn't spoken to the Obama campaign regarding their joint statement as agreed.

He wanted to "put the campaign on hold" knowing full well that the cameras would follow him right to Washington but since he would be "busy" he wouldn't actually have to pretend to be a leader, he could just look the part. See? They think we're stupid. ;-)

Let the debate go on! Obama is right, let's see the real leaders here.

The sad part is, about 27% of the American people actually believe McCain's line about "putting my campaign on hold because of the economic crisis".

These are the same 27% who apparently don't know Phil "we're a nation of whiners" Gramm, the man single-handedly responsible for the sub-prime mortgage meltdown, continues to be John McCain's chief economic advisor.

These are the same 27% who don't understand Congress is under Democratic control, and that McCain can't do jack squat about this crisis back in Washington.

you're right.....

Phil Gramm has done more to damage this country than about anyone. Why the heck McCain has him I'll never know. McCain is trying to pull a fast one on missing the debate. I say have it with Obama there, and let him talk for an hour and discuss what he'd like to do to re-direct our country.

McCain, who can't figure out the economy by his own admission, can't bring much to the table in Washington right now.

My Congressman, who's a Republican and who I like, just sent an e-mail out saying he wasn't supporting this bail-out, good for him.

I think the problem is, Grampy McSame and Caribu Barbie will have to face up the lies they have been saying in the media. If you had lied as much as they have, would you want to debate and have it thrown back at you?

This forum is not meant for political views

Guys, come on!This forum is set up souly for appliances vintage and new.Not political views.I am sure there are PLENTY of other websites that focus on your political views.Just like ass holes, everybody has their own political opinion.I just don't see where this is the place to share it.It has nothing to do with appliances. It has already begun to cause strife here.

My thought is if political postings upset people, those persons should refrain from reading the posts. We are mostly adults, and as such we should be able to take criticism, and the occasional jab at our beliefs, without resorting to histrionics. My take is that there are more people here supporting Obama than McCain, but the McCain supporters are more rabblerouseres.

If something someone posts hurts you, I think you need to look at yourself and see just why a comment in what ever form impacts your life. You can call me names and tell me to go to f'n hell and it's not gong to affect my views. This is one site that I can separate the political views form the person. I know some are rabidly anti Obama, yet that does not make me loose respect for the knowledge they offer with various machines.

I came here to learn about older machines and offer what little advice I can. What I found was a healthy vibrant community composed of people from all walks of life who freely offer to share there abilities and experience with all who come here. that is pretty special. Of course we all have strong opinions on politics, and I am not going to change my support for my candidate, but I do like to see other viewpoints to help me understand the other person better. In one of the more active threads I learned a lot about Mark (Lightedcontrols)and I can appreciate more of where he's coming from.

To remove the off topic aspect of this site would be to severely limit it. As it is now it's a well rounded group of people that I look forward to "visiting" with each day, and that includes warts and all.

"off topic conversations such as vintage appliances and

From what I understand regarding his site. The thread here is to discus APPLIANCES and ELECTRONICS not politics and sex.I just don't see why people can't either keep their own politcal beliefs as well as sex stories about idols, movie stars, musicians and politicians to themselves and go to other sites where it's comon practice to gossip about others and be political.Talk about Hamilton Beach,Maytag,Zenith,Seeburg,Hoover,kelvinator...,etc.I belive would be a lot more appropriate.

Me thinks this has been brought up before and Robert the owner doesn't mind as long as it all stays fairly civil is my understanding. Not everyone can agree but they can agree to disagree. It matters not to me that some people on here are staunch Bible toting Rs etc. The majority on both sides are pretty respectful most of the time. It's doubtful anything posted is going to change anyones mind but it might eventually as ones own lifes circumstances change for some reason or another. Personally I like to hear opposing viewpoints.

I am sure it would be a hair raiser, browel raiser if I were to go to one of these political websites and talk about appliances insted of politics

I with the "Petes" on this one. During times of great national interest, crisis and political strife, this group of people comes together and discusses amongst themselves the issues of the day. There is no harm in the political discussions as it gives people from all sides a perspective of the opposing viewpoints. Someone posted in the last couple of weeks that we all fundamentally want the same things for our country, we just have different views of how to get there. A very good friend of mine is a life-long republican and will likely never change her mind about some of the opinions that would make me scream and claw my face and likewise she feels the same about some of my opinions. We don't let these differences have an adverse affect on our friendship, they only enhance it. So too it is here. We have come together with common interests and develop friendships that will likely last a lifetime. We don't have to agree on everything, and likely won't. I load my cereal bowls in the dishwasher going back to front and others do it front to back. These are all differences in human nature. One of the best parts of being good friends with people is that you can throw cereal bowls at one another in an argument over political, philosophical, religious views and then go back to admiring the design aesthetics of the laundry offerings in 1958. As we all have seen in the last week or so, there have been a few instances of our friendships betrayed by someone who can only make their point by cowardly emails that attempt to belittle the recipients for their views. This practice has been exposed and hopefully will cease. We all bring our passions and personal experiences to the discussion and from time to time will let those move beyond polite and civilized expression. Where better to let your hair down and be yourself than among friends? Who better to help shape your view of the world than your friends? Who better to give you valuable perspective than your friends and those who care about you? If you don't like these kinds of discussions, you can choose to participate or keep clicking the buttons on your mouse until you find something on this site more to your liking. Please don't come into these threads and tell us how to behave or that we should move to another site. This forum has been created for "off-topic" discussions for THOSE WHO CHOOSE to participate in them. If you don't like what you see in a thread, keep clicking that mouse!

It should be a riot, watching John "Keating 5" McCain try and distance himself from HIS OWN chief economic advisor. Responsibility for this current housing and investment firm catastrophe can be put squarely on the head of Phil "We're a nation of whiners" Gramm. Gramm was chairman of the Senate Banking Committee from 1999-2001, and in 2000 he wrote and wedged through a 243-page amendment (without any floor debate) to a bill that completely deregulated the investment services industry.

And now McCain is claiming he'll ride back to D.C. on a white horse and save us from what Gramm did. The really pathetic part is that some people actually believe that's why McCain put his campaign "on hold". The real reason is, in any debate he's going to be slaughtered for his (and Gramm's) past actions.

All the more reason for McCain postpone the debates, don't you think? Of course, the real reason to postpone the VP debate has more to do with her "readiness" than anything else. BTW, Did you watch Palin's interview with Katie Couric? Katie's facial expressions were quite telling. Kind of the "Scooby Doo huh?" and a little "WTF?" at the same time.

Interesting statement considering most everyone else we hear today surmise that it was totally a political move. It has come out today from the McCain campaign that McCain asked Bush to call them both to the White House for this "meeting" today despite bi-partisan congressional leaders saying it would be better for them both to stay away. McCain hasn't posted a vote since April in the Senate and doesn't sit on any banking/finance committee, so what exactly did he think he was needed for? It smells more like an overcooked ham.

Now, to be fair, Obama hasn't voted in the Senate since July (August recess excepted in both cases) and also does not sit on any related committee so his presence in D.C. wasn't necessary either.

AP 4:30PM
"McCain hoped voters would believe that he rose above politics to wade into successful, nitty-gritty dealmaking at a time of urgent crisis, but he risked being seen instead as either overly impulsive or politically craven, or both. Obama saw a chance to appear presidential and fit for duty, but was also caught off guard strategically by McCain's surprising gamble in saying he was suspending his campaigning and asking to delay Friday night's debate to focus on the crisis."

It appears that the debate will go on as scheduled, they seem to be moving ahead at 'Ole Miss today...
