A friend of mine and I reinstalled (by doing the recovery mode in his computer and reformatting everything) Windows 7.

Windows Media player was working before we did this, but now, it's doing absolutely NOTHING. We tried to view a few of the videos on here, and all that came up was a black screen. No sound...nothing. And, in other videos, there's an error message stating it needs to find a program to view these files (typical .wmv and others in that realm).

Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas as to what the problem may be and a possible fix?

+1 on VLC

I generally use VLC over Windows Media Player. It uses less resources and supports more file types.

Still you should be able to get WMP running. From your description is sounds like part of the problem is that Windows isn't properly associating the file types with WMP. Perhaps the easiest thing to do is to just Google Windows Media Player and go to the Microsoft site and download and install the current version. That should insure its all there and current and will set the associations for you.

Another hint is whenever confronted by a PC error, Google the text the error window gives you. Almost all the time there is information online to help you troubleshoot and repair the issue.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the same problem with Windows Media Player - I was getting a server execution error...whatever that means. The video window would be black but I could hear the sound. I tried restoring to the oldest restore point....that didn't help. I did a google search and it seems like many people were having the same problems. One person provided a link to download a software tool called PC Doctor. It scanned my computer and found over 2500 errors (I use windows 7). Of course to fix the errors I had to buy the product but it did fix all the errors and now windows media player works again.
