Memories of Estate Sale Saturdays

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Robert, thanks so much for the memories!! I remember back in 2000-2001 when you were doing this. I always looked forward to either Saturday evening or Sunday morning when you would get all the pictures posetd. What fun. When you had the first wash-in in Aug. of 2001 that was the first time I had ever been to an estate sale. I know that it was a lot of work for you to post all those pictures with your fun captions but believe me I really appreciated and enjoyed them. Terry

And at the very first Estate sale during the 2001 convention we arrive in the basement and we all almost died until we took a closer look...

thanks for the KDS-14 photo

My mother gutted the kitchen of our 1930's-era house in San Diego within a month of moving in, in late 1961. While a heavy duty white gas range was tossed out, the overall result was a state of the art 1961 kitchen with maple cabinets, white Formica (door hardware pulls matched the counters...), SS electric cooktop and double wall oven by Frigidaire, an enclosure for the GE fridge, and the piece de resistance, a brand new built in KA KDS-14, 1961 or 62 model (I can't remember if she finished the remodel by the end of 61 or not, but the project didn't seem to take too long, I only remember a few weeks of fast food and cooking on a hot plate in the laundry room...next to the 1958 GE Filter Flo and matching gas dryer, of course...and no I don't think Mom ever bought the Air Freshener tablets).

I remember the control panel of the KA perfectly, and we only used Rinse-Hold and Normal cycles. NEVER the Utility cycle, probably because my mother wasn't into reading manuals, and since she didn't know what the Utility button did, no one ever pushed it. In the 10 additional years we lived in that house, I don't think anyone EVER used the Utility cycle.

Anyway, the one thing I cannot recall is the color of the front panel. The surviving photos of the kitchen don't show the KA, they were taken from the KA side of the room and show the oven and fridge. Does anyone know if KAs were adaptable to custom wood panels in the early 1960s? I sort of seem to remember a panel that matched the cabinets, but I can't remember if it was actually wood, or maybe brown metal that came close to matching the cabinets. The front was definitely not stainless steel.

Great Photo Journal...

Robert,

Thanks for sharing. If I couldn't be there in person, it's fun to live vicariously through the lens of your camera. It looks like a good time was always had by all in attendance.

Glenda, those shorts are something else!

Mike

I can't believe that you still had that picture Robert!! It was so unreal, I mentioned to Scott when we arrived at the first sale that I would really love to find a GE pot-belly coffee maker and then we go in and bingo, it was there. I still enjoy using that coffeemaker today! That was such a fun time and we are all so happy that you made it happen. So many lasting friendships were built from that event!!

love the pictures!

More please, these are awesome!

Louis, thats an Amana washer like I have stored in my basement... saving it for I don't know what!!

Hotpoint Dryer

Jeff, the reason for the clean out panel in the Hotpoint dryer is that both the LB, blower model and LC, condenser model shared the same basic inner perforated drum and solid outer tub construction. Because of that, lint would accumulate between the tubs. Sharing this design, the original design Hamilton dryers had cleanout ports in their drums and Frigidaire Filtrators gave some access for cleanout when the Filtrator cartridge was removed. Later, the Sheer Look Filtrators had a clean out port on the rear of the drum to help with this task. Some of the condenser washer-dryer combinations had panels in the inner basket that gave access to the outer tub so that the lint could be removed from thermostats and other places where it lodged.

If this lady saw the stuff behind that cleanout panel, she would probably think it was insulation, which it had become, but not in a good way. That's sort of like some owners of Maytag HOH dryers who thought that the lint buildup on the revolving Dynamic Disc lint filter was part of the filter and worried that a service person had removed and not replaced a vital part of the machine when he cleaned the mat from the filter.

That little plastic button at the top of the door was the mounting tab for a little plastic cage which held an air freshener tablet.

Amazing!

Wow, Rob - we NEVER see anything like these appliances anymore! I remember the very first sale that you, Scott and I went to in 2000 - it was 6 blocks from my house and in the basement there was a 1960 Frigidaire set. Now, half the time we don't even get access to the basement! Plus, sales are moving farther out into the suburbs. It's just not worth it to drive 15 miles to look at bad '80's furniture! It would be nice to start taking pictures again - there just isn't much to get excited about.

Plus - Robert, you don't look like you've aged at all. HMMM...What's your secret? Diet? Exercise? Photoshop?

Hi Scott - I hope you are doing well in Los Angeles!

These pics are great, I took some pics of sales here for a while too, I'll look to see if I have them on a disc somewhere. Mostly boring old black-panel Hotpoints and Kenmores around here though...

That first convention was so much fun - I think I even have a picture of Louis in a fur coat around here somewhere! Wasn't there a hat too? Now I have to hunt!

Estate Sale Saturdays!!!

WELL! - Gary

Plus - Robert, you don't look like you've aged at all. HMMM...What's your secret? Diet? Exercise? Photoshop?

mmmm huh, let's go have another Tremendous Twelve at Perkins.

Great stuff!!!

Hey thanks Robert, hadnt realised what a sharp devil you are with that camera, had only seen it on Glens pics, should have known better!!!....

Oh what fun, I tell you estate sailing with these guys was a blast, we have nothing like it here, I found the Sweeper Vac right up in the attic of a massive house, tucked in the eaves under a pile of stuff, all of $5...it cost a little more to ship along with my Electrolux XXX but was worth it..

Cheers, Mike

p.s.what is your secret to ageing???

All those picture are great!

I love the captions.

I bet those people thought you were crazy running around their house snapping pic's of their bathrooms and living rooms.

If you get bored, ( right ) post some more, these are great!

I can't believe you didn't grab the Apex combo!

Or the brown wood front Kitchenaid dishwasher! LOL!

I love pink but, that bathroom....

Thanks Robert

Great pictures Robert. Some of the pictures of the washers brought back wonderful memories of my childhood helping Grandma, aunts, and neighbors on wash day.

Thanks

David

*WOW* amazing. I got so caught up in this that I left for work late today YAY!

#14. HMM. A gas dryer is generally easier on the environment than an electric one is unless power is hydro-electric. It is generally less expensive to operate, as well. I wonder if the gas service came to this house later than the dryer did? Odd that gas service is less than one foot away and the dryer is electric.......

#16. Love that the "Sears Best" logo is taped back on.

Wonderful to see these pics which evoke such warm memories both of mahcines and faces!

Thanks for posting this, Robert!

Something for everyone--Perfect, Robert--Thanks

Couldn't resist the Piano Key Lady K with the Suds-saver. You've gotta look real close to see it on the dial, located in a most unusual position, but the two hoses in the sink are dead giveaways.

And how 'bout that Visimatic with a working timer.

What a sweetheart you are Robert. Nice to know that all the Unimatics went home with you, the lucky little leprechauns.

Top O' the Evnin" ta yis all !!!!!!! Go have a bit o' the drop= Irish for a good stiff drink or two or four ;'D

Those pics are great! Not having basements in California, I loved peeking into the basements of Minnieapolis and Omaha during Robert's and Greg's estate sale excursions. Thanks for reposting those, Robert! I especially like the 1964 or 65 Westy top loader with the black agitator with a big W on the cap. How cool is that?!

Great pics to look at. Mom had a very similar to picture 47, 62ish Kenmore dryer. I remember that dial with the colors around it but ours had a side swing door and I don't remember the dashboard looking as tall.

That couch.. it's a little over the top you have to admit.
