Question, does any manufacturer make the microwave/thermal oven combinations any more? GE and Frigidaire Used to have a 30" model. I am talking about the models that had microwave capabilities in the main oven. Not the OTR micro/convections on the market now.

While available in different widths, most speed ovens seem to be only about 18 inches tall.

We still have them here, sometimes combined with steam and pyrolitic cleaning like some of these

Thank you for your kind words Laundress ! Thank you for the information Logixx! I think the last US manufactured unit was the GE Trivection wall oven.

Micro thermal, full size, self cleaning ovens

GE manufactured and sold the first one in around 1965. They had both single oven and double oven 30 inch freestanding ranges with this feature.

The last two sold were manufactured around 2008. They were both 30 inch built-in wall ovens you could either get the Thermidor or the GE tri vection. There was also 30 inch Jen air wall oven, which I’ve never seen in person And Thermidor also had their jet convection micro thermal oven from around that time in the early 2000s

We have 11 different micro thermal ovens all hooked up in the museum kitchen if you ever want to see one Phil here in Beltsville.

This was a wonderful concept that just didn’t Take off people are basically too stupid to use technology and very few people learn to use them and experience the great advantage of them.

I think Thermidor made by far the most of them in their very popular single and double wall ovens it was a very popular builder and high-end homes throughout the 80s .

I couldn’t imagine not having one in my kitchen having had one for over 40 years. It just makes cooking so much faster and easier and better I have two in my own home, I have the Thermidor double wall oven in the kitchen and the 30 inch caloric built micro gas Out in the outdoor kitchen. I use both of them every week.

I for one!

Am not too stupid, I just do not want or need everything to be fast, No thank you, ill stick to a normal stove, The very best things in your museum kitchen are that gas Caloric wall oven and that Hotpoint with the fold down units, I wouldnt trade that for anything ive ever used, the others worked good but i didnt try all that microwave stuff.

Micro thermal ovens

This past Tuesday I spent all afternoon visiting friends. I have relatives in town and yet I threw a nice dinner party for 10 at 6:30.

I didn’t get home until 430. I baked an apple pie from scratch 10 minutes baking time, and then I put a 5 1/2 pound boneless lamb roast in the already hot oven. It was done and under an hour it was amazingly brown and moist cooked beautifully. I also cooked fresh kale with bacon bits in the pressure cooker in five minutes and steamed a dozen ears of fresh corn and cut it off the cob.

I don’t want to be a slave to the kitchen all day long I love cooking, but there’s just more fun things in life to do. Both of these items were better cooked and looked better than if I had all afternoon to bake them.

The pie crust was perfect. It wasn’t burned around the edges. It was evenly cooked , unfortunately there were no leftovers people that went out to the kitchen to help clean up, cleaned up everything including the last of the pie and the lamb. Lol.

When my ex and I remodeled the kitchen in our Brooklyn condo, we put a Thermador Micro/Thermal oven in, along with a Thermador Range so we had triple ovens ( he liked to bake and I thought it was overkill but he won)
What an awful peice of junk it turned out to be. Broke constantly and a bad, inconvenient microwave. It did bake pretty good when it worked. I dont think they make them anymore.

Later Thermidor micro thermal wall ovens

Hi Jim, that series of Thermidor ovens came out in the 90s. It was the same great Thermidor design that came out in 1977, but they put an early electronic system that was made in Germany for the complete control system of the oven, and it was awful.

I found it difficult to use, and it was also unreliable, it was a real shame when I get a hold of those ovens, I strip them for parts for the earlier ovens but I would never resell one of those like you had.

It’s too bad that Thermidor ever even made that oven. I think they wanted to forget they ever made them, lol their regular wall ovens use the same control system around that time and they also had a lot of trouble.

But the concept was still great, and like many other products some are great some are awful.

Combo mode

I have used the combo feature on my convect/microwave OTR. It's amazing with lasagna and roasting a whole chicken or turkey breast. Brownies and Cakes were kind of iffy. Never tried a pie.

I actually only have a countertop speed oven. It suffices for basically everything I bake. It does have a rotisserie but I've only used it once because cleaning up after its use took a lot longer than the usual two minutes.

I guess it's about 20 years old now and comes with a regular heating element below the turntable, as well as two Quartz heaters to broil and another two for the European convection. Total draw is 3,100 watts.
