Pulled the "quick install" converter box apart. There is really nothing in it! Found that one fuse housing was melted and bad. This is a 20amp fuse connector that contains a 15amp fuse. Replaced this with a new one from Grainger. Reconnected everything back up and the washer is dead. No sign of power at all. Plugged the washer into the dryer side of the install box and the dryer into the washer side. The dryer works fine, the washer still has no power. Followed all wires and secured all connections. Nothing. Deadness. Crickets chirping.

Next steps?

Gyrofoam, you need to hush...

No sign of any melting anywhere. No sign of any fuse anywhere. The washer is remarkably simple under the hood. It reminds me an awful lot like my laundromat machines. I wish I was better at electronics troubleshooting...

Strange my '56 Hotpoint doesn't have a "convert

Peter did you check to see if power is making it to the otherside of the fuse? Do you have a multimeter?

...and then into the machine itself.

Perhaps the fuse housing was melted due to ecessive current draw, but not enough to blow a fuse. Which then may have melted a conductor in your power ("flex") cord. It might pay to check it for continuity.

Then think about WHY the fuse housing was melted.......
