For much of recent laundry appliance history

Domestic rotary irons/mangles have been something that feel between absolute necessity to neither use nor ornament.

Suppose in early part of last century when nearly everything had to be ironed from flatwork (bed, bath and table linens) to personal items from undergarments to clothing, an ironer made sense. It certainly could save on work for Her Indoors or whoever was doing laundry. That and or it cut down on laundry bills as less things had to be sent out.

Being as all this may the things by 1940's or post war era never fully caught on IIRC. With the tumble dryer becoming a household staple along with changes in changes in standards of living, and new modern fabrics, ironing in general fell by the wayside. In most homes the things that still need to be ironed are usually men's dress shirts, and they are often sent out.
