Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Launderess, this could be good backup machine for you if the Pfaff breaks again, go for it . . . nothing like dimming the lights in the entire neighborhood to let everyone know you've purchased a really serious appliance!

*LOL*

Stop, you're killing me!

Don't think this unit runs on natural gas, I mean there wasn't that much of the stuff around in 1950's Germany. Least not that I am aware of, but could be wrong.

IIRC, this behemoth runs on 408v power, or something like that. Think two European 220v lines of power. It probably wouldn't be legal to install the thing for domestic use here in the states. Well suppose one could but it might require allot of explaining..

Saw one of these in a laundry pictured somewhere in Oz or nearby, still in daily use. As a matter of fact there are quite a few scattered all over Germany in priviate homes/estates still doing what they were meant to do.

These units are *very* popular with home ironing services, something that is still rather a large cottage industry in Germany and other parts of Europe. The beauty of these uber-sized units is being able to do large flatwork (table cloths, bed sheets, bedspreads, etc) without being folded or with perhaps just one fold, thus in many cases no creases.

Translation:

Last ironing service in Rhynern closes.

After 20 years as a lessee, Bettina Bibrach turns off the ironer and closes the small business in the her house, house number 7, "It is with a heavy heart" how the Bergkamenerin says. "I have it gladly made".  Until about ten years ago, she operated also another cleaning service in Rhynern, Germany.  Reasons for the closing are to be found the diminishing demand, the difficulty, finding help, and the steadily increasing extra expenses.

The house had been in the family that acquired the house of the former girl school before almost 100 years and  located there a department store and in 1959 started the cleaning service in the rebuilt former stable and warehouse. "I helped", remembered Johannes Brokbals. "in the transitional period  my wife and I  continued the cleaning service.  Three lessees provided continuation of the service over the years.  Brokbals tried to offer the old Miele as a museum piece to the manufacturer but no buyers could not be found for the gas heated ironer.

Shame, Shame

Germany and to an extent Austria have to be ironer/mangel heaven far as one is concerned.

On ebay, hood.de, the Interent, as well as any place else one can push goods, you find listings for scores of ironers, wringers, mangles, and all that goes with them. This includes those large (and dangerous) box mangels.

Sadly modern times are invading even Germany and her cousins. Less and less housewives use pure linen and or the types of such that require ironing. What cannot go from the wash to the tumble dryer or be hung to dry, folded the put away languishes in cupboards, chests or is sold off. When a family member passes away the ironing appliance, along with all that would see it's use is often sold off as well.

OTHO energy, labour and other costs are rising. It must cost plenty to run that behemoth of an ironer daily. Don't think it is the type of thing you heat up for a few sheets! *LOL*

Miele probably has more than enough of these units, so can see why they would turn it down.

Given the costs and difficulties of shipping anything out of Germany, if this unit is not purchased, it probably will go for "recycling" or scrap.

Thanks for the translation Whirlcool. What a dark horse you are, had no idea you were fluent!

I would have to say that machine runs from 3P380-400V 50Hz.The blower in the bottom is a form of "ring blower"it generates high air pressure. One of our transmitters out here has several of these ring blowers-they cool tube envelopes and sockets, vacuum capacitor bodies, and coils. The blowers in the transmitter so look like what is in that pressing machine.they run from 380-400V 3ph.Really neat presser-ironer machine-would have to run that at work-off the 380-400V supply in one of our Europion transmitters-they have supplies in them to step incoming 4160V 3ph to 380-400V 3ph-220V(220V derived from any phase to neutral.)The motor in the other end would have to assume drives the presser roller.JUST DON'T GET CAUGHT IN THAT MACHINE!!!!You would reinact the movie "The MANGLER!!"
