Miele sensor electronic W784

Hi everyone,

Do any of you have much experience with the Miele W784? I’m having an issue with mine. The timer just keeps rapidly advancing and won’t stay on any section so it won’t run any cycle. I would love to get it working as it’s in perfect condition apart from this fault. Before I got it the machine sat unused for over 15 years in an unoccupied house. It was built under but didn’t have its lid on so I think dust etc has worked its way inside over the years.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Several current and former member have same or similar washer, so hopefully will chime in soon with responses.

Your washer has what Miele called "rapid advance" timer, but it's all or mostly electronics. If it were an electro/mechanical timer/programmer one would guess a timer motor has gone wonky.

Apparently Miele did have issues with electronics for this series of washing machines. Perhaps that is why previous owners left it sat sitting for nearly 20 years...

Rapid Advance Timers

Jamie and I are in the somewhat curious position of each having this Miele washer and matching tumble drier and one of the set having the same problem with the rapid advance timer - in my case its the drier, the washer (which features in both videos above) is fine, the programmer in the drier just goes round and round. So any help with this problem would be appreciated by us both.

I would post a video of the machine in operation but there is literally nothing to see as it has a solid door

Thanks for the information, I think my machine was one of the last of the w784s to be built so hopefully whatever electronic issues there were they were fixed. The background to the machine sitting for so long was that the owner moved in with his gf just after buying the house so never lived in it. At some point there was a fire so he replaced the kitchen and as a result installed the washer and matching dryer. The dryer had never been used and only needed the motor capacitor replaced but unfortunately the washer is a bit more sick.

I really hope I can get it sorted as it’s a beautiful machine.

Seems to be a common enough issue, but not many explanations or other information out there.



My German isn't up to snuff, but believe this owner of T 351 dryer fixed issue with "schaltwerk", but doesn't say anything else.

Have you tried the obvious first choice? Ringing Miele to see if they will give any indication as to what is wrong? Know from experience getting any information from them about older appliances is often like talking to brick. But you never know...

Having only recently dealt with a timer/programmer issue with our vintage (ok ancient) Miele washer, next suggestion is to start looking for either NOS or even used programmer/timer.

Miele UK should at least still have information on parts (such as a diagram) and hopefully including numbers. Then you at least would know what you're seeking in terms of replacement.

Other members might know, but am sure there are one or more FB groups for European laundry appliances. You could also try posting your query there in aid of getting suggestions.

Unfortunately Miele UK have gotten rid of a lot of the old people that knew about the older machines so they are pretty useless now.

They do at least have the parts lists on their site now and the part number for the rapid advance timer is 1569664 (Timer MTA 600.11L) though the most recent one is 1569666 (timer MTA 600.11N). Unfortunately its no longer available.

The machine seems to be pretty rare here in the UK as the only ones I know of are mine and the one at Als. Ideally I would like to get one off another old machine so it might have to be the case to keep my eyes open for one to come up. There seems to have been 17 versions of it so I guess they must have made a lot of changes to it over the years

Jamie try blowing down the pipe see if its blocked as that has been known to cause this issue.

Oh you too then? It's been like that on this side of pond for some time now. Though if one understands correctly Miele USA had a management reshuffle. Result was new man in charge made changes which helped many to abandon ship.

Miele tech support here no longer will give any sort of information along those lines. They will book call outs, and pretty much nothing else.

It pays to keep one's eyes out for spares, even if on the continent. You never know what will turn up and when.

According to my tech manual W770, W772, W783, and W784 are all part of same model series, one main difference is last two are fully electronic controls, while first lot are electronic with also mechanical controls.

pressure switch hose blocked

This is a cheap and easy first thing to check. A very good suggestion by ozzie908.

Rapid advancing all the way through a cycle often isn't a timer fault, it is the machine telling you it refuses to operate due to a detected fault - like a pressure switch that didn't reset after drain/spin...

 

I had a couple of salvaged Askos that refused to spin, rapid advanced through the spin cycle. They had been checked over by the local Asko distributors' own service department, partially dismantled and fault not found, the machines were thrown out at the recycle centre and I bought them as scrap - they only had blocked pressure switch hoses, blocked with detergent residue and nasty gunk, easily cleared with hot water. They lasted for years after that. They were similar age to your Miele. Only a couple of years old when I got them.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for the input and advice; I really appreciate it. I am going to have a look at the pressure switch to see if it’s blocked but as the machine has never really been used I’m not sure there will be much in there. I have also attached a link to a video of what it’s doing atm. What is also strange is that I can press and open the door while the drum is still spinning I think is odd for a machine like this.

Now we might be on to something.

Door most certainly should NOT open during spin cycle and or high water levels. My Miele is of a similar model (under the bonnet at least) and pressing "Door" button does nothing once washer has filled above certain level, and or is spinning.



There is feedback between door lock and machine that does this, and any issue with former could cause problems with machine operation.

Sometimes when my washer's door is closed, but not seated properly, it won't start or do anything else. Have to use emergency door release switch to open, then close properly and all is well.

Open front of washer, find wiring schematic and have a look tracing circuit from door lock to electronics.

It *might* be that either a faulty door lock and or some fault (such as lose wire) is causing machine to believe door isn't closed. That would mean machine wouldn't progress through cycles. It also could explain why you can open door when shouldn't.

Door Lock

Hi Laundress,

I did another test on it last night and actually I think the door lock is ok. I tried opening it while it started spinning and it wouldn't open. Because the timer is ticking through constantly I probably caught it as it had actually finished spinning and had cycled off if that makes sense. I also sprayed some WD40 on the lock just to make sure it wasn't sticking.

I will try and look at the pressure switch over the weekend to see if that has anything to do with it.

Machine update

Hi everyone

The timer arrived and I installed it last night and the machine is now working fine .

Thank you everyone for your help and especially to laundress who found the eBay ad for the the timer, if it wasn’t for you the machine would still be out of action. The machine sounds great and super quiet for it’s age. I tested it out last night with a spin and then a rinse and today I have done a load of towels in it and the machine sounds amazing.

How ever did you manage? Could have sworn that eBay listing said "no shipping". Then again could have been mistaken.

Am glad you got yourself and machine sorted. Sometimes if possible (and on offer for a good price) just to swap out malfunctioning part with new.
