Miele/Speed Queen/LG Washer & Dryer

We are in the market for a new washer and dryer. We have looked at the Miele W1/T1, 2017 SpeedQueen stainless steel front loader and gas dryer and LG WM5000HVA | DLGX5001V front loader and gas dryer.

Previous washer and dryer were Miele 4822/T9822, which only last about 8 years, which was disappointing for the price paid. We had service calls 4 times, which add up. It also did not have the smoothest vibration. Still considering Miele, as maybe it was a fluke, since those were made just for the North American market. Miele and Speed Queen are built like a tank.

Have read good things about the Speed Queen washer and dryer and mixed reviews on LG, although Consumer Reports ranks this one as one of the best.

Appreciate any input, as we are having a tough time deciding.

For my money the LG represents the best value of those three sets of machines, acknowledging the controls-on-the-door seem awfully prone to failure down the line. The lower price allows (especially if found on sale, essentially not possible with SQ or Miele) one to purchase a generous third party warranty extension and come in about half the SQ. So if you repeated this LG purchase in 10-12 years you break even with the SQ...that is IF it lives up to it’s longevity claims and the LG falls short. But you get a bigger and arguably better machines all the while, and a much newer (10-12 year) machine half of the time if you opt for LG’s. The SQ Dryer is a pretty face on a dependable but crude machine. From my experience moisture sensing tech is, apparently, laughably, unknown to SQ. Read the reviews and you will not want to pony up even half of what the Stainless SQ dryer runs. Also the LG washer allows the option of a “mini washer” as an added option, that may appeal to you.
I also have the SQ FL washer and it was a massive headache because it constantly required major repairs until it finally decided to work right. SQ would not replace it —they never do— so I am left crossing my fingers with every wash even though it has worked for over a year now...can never trust this thing after what I went through.
Miele seems like a sucker deal for Americans...so I don’t even consider them really.[this post was last edited: 8/15/2018-22:56]

If you are talking about the 4842... I have one.

The main bearing went out 3 weeks after I got it.

Told the tech and Miele the machine will be replaced or Lawyers, Guns and Money would be involved.

Since it was I have had two issues. other than that, with Water Plus programmed it is a Great Machine.

Will dig around for the thread.

On the Speed Queen, since it the last stainless frontload washer and dryer the local appliance store has, they are being very aggressive on price making is very similar to the LG's with the pedestal and sidekick. I thought Speed Queen was supposed to be really reliable. It seems like everything is hit or miss these days. Sad... Very hard to find real reviews too.

Still tempted by LG, since it has more features and seems newer. Sorry to hear about your Speed Queen, as I thought they were supposed to be reliable machines. Their dryer does seem flimsy though compared to Miele we had and the newer Miele too.

A steep discount certainly helps, I usually recommend SQ if bought used at a good price.
That said, here is more of my unfortunate experience when I bought a new set:

SQ’s customer service is not ready for prime time, i.e. residential customers. They spent most of the time trying to weasel out of doing anything, and had zero sympathy, constantly suggesting user error as the cause for my manifest problems with their pile-of-expensive-shit machine. Turned out it was their shoddy and defective low-buck foreign electronics that were at fault. The main computer board on my washer (and many other unlucky SQ customers with defective machines) had to be replaced on 3 separate ocassions, often after weeks of waiting, while sucking up their sass on the telephone. Never again.

It seems SQ really wants all customer care handled at the dealer level, so if you move probably best to leave the machines behind. And obviously, make sure your dealer REALLY likes you...cuz otherwise you are EFFED like I was. They PREEMPTIVELY alert you (ahem, if you call and ask) to their mentality by WARNING you not to buy their products online, even from authorized dealers! Did you know that? I didn’t, my bad...by which I mean: NEVER AGAIN.

Thanks for that information. I think buy a washer and dryer set is worse than buying a car. I thought I picked out 3 good units/brands, but seems every brand is hit or miss, which is very frustrating and reviews for every brand our all over the place.

LG negative reviews say the washer can leak, Speed Queen is like what is above and Miele W1/T1 in the US are very few if any reviews on the dryer and in the rest of the world, the reviews on those are not very good, if they are the same set.

Even though I would have loved the capacity the Miele 4XXX series were dogs.

I couldn't use the speed queen because of its lack of an internal heater I need to sustain 60C loads to kill animal bacteria.

It appears the midrange performance bargain is the new Electrolux series.

Good for 22LB loads they seem to split the diff between the cheaper units and the higher end units.

My largest weekly loads the queen size beds each fit fine in the W1 and my 4 separate weekly bins don't come close to filling it.

Either go for Miele again (the W1/T1 machines are smaller than your current pair, but about the same capacity; there is the commercial Octoplus series if you want 27" machines), or LG... or the big Maytag Maxima.
