Miele W1986 and programmable options

Hi all, as some of you are aware I have new Miele W1986 washer. It was the last of it's kind in the clearance section, all the new machines being Touchtronics. Before I bought it, I wanted an opinion from someone who owned one so I wrote our friend Tom (Turbomatic) who gave me a concise synopsis of what to expect. His review was very favorable and he felt it was one of the best of the 1900 Novotronic series. Well, having bought and used it, I have to concur. But still, all the other Novotronics had programmable options stated in their manuals such as raising the rinse water level, adding an extra rinse etc. but the manual for the W1986 had no such information for this machine leading me to believe that those options were not available on our machines. This seemed odd to me so I decided to get to the bottom of this. I called Miele Canada, and spoke with a very helpful woman named Sally. She got in touch with the #1 technician in Canada who specializes in the 1900 series of machines. Well, to make a long story short, there are indeed MANY programmable options for this machine and I was sent a copy of the user accessible codes. Among the various changes one can make to the 1986 are: raising the rinse water level to high, cooling the suds of the main wash before drain, choosing either cold intake or hot & cold, and believe it or not, choosing cold or HOT rinses! The flexibility of this machine astounds me. There's also a choice of 4 different options for the "sensitive" button and a memory feature as well. Am I ever pleased to discover this. Every single option you mention can do on my "electronic" Miele W1070 by merely turning a knob or pressing a button.

By default machine adds cold water to all "Cottons" cycle, and uses "cyclic rinsing" with cold water for the PP cycle.

If I wish to use a high water level for the wash, simply set the washer for "delicate" and after it fills, move the cycle knob over to "PP" or "Cottons". Can also use "cyclic rinsing" for a cotton cycle and so forth. No muss, no fuss, and no programming.

Computers are wonderful, but so are simple electronic/mechanical controls as well.

I am in great debt to Eddy for his detective work on the W1986. Laundress, knowing all of the programming options on the W1918, it struck us as odd that the W1986 offered nothing like W1918. I now have my W1986 programmed so that when I select a cycle, the Sensitive light lights up giving me 3 automatic HIGH WATER LEVEL rinses! The fill level is the same as Fine Rinse gives. The cycle is also 10 minutes longer because the amount of time that the load spends in each rinse is double the default time.

According to Miele reps I've spoken with, Miele's marketing and research determined Amercians simply did not wish all those cycles and choices, so they were "removed".

It is important to remember Miele does not per se build special washing machines for the US market, well not until the 4000 series. Rather they took whatever model of washing machine that was being sold elsewhere, and reconfigured some features (mainly the power source), for the American market. Therefore it does not surprise me that one can reprogram various machines to use dormant functions. The motherboards/computers are the same, only items are "turned off" for sake of the American models.

Just make sure anyone planning to alter their Miele units, that Miele won't treat such actions as cancelling their warranty. Have been hearing some funny things about Miele lately in terms of service and warranty issues.
