Great Find!

I have this dishwasher as a second dishwasher. Portable.
You will like it's cleaning. The cycles are very different from the 18 series. I really like the main wash, it is longer than the 18.

Awesome machine

That is the machine my parents had in a house built in 1981/1982. They lived in the house for 25 years. Three kids, grandma (most of the time) and three meals a day.

That diswasher had one repair all those years and was ran daily. It is a bit loud, especially by todays standards.
 
Now that I have a window in a KD-12 I want more LOL!

That's a really nice find Eddie, congrats! Ok a window needs go into a machine of this style in this spot (pictured below), question is where to move the detergent dispenser. I could live without the rinse aid dispenser, but obviously the detergent dispenser is necessary. I suppose it could be moved to the side of the tank and you could use packet or tablet type detergent to easily load the dispenser turned on its side. Any other ideas????

You know Robert...Now that I have 2 KDS I was thinking the same thing. Really. I was thinking about cutting a Window around the Detergent Dispensor. I don't ever use Jet Dry here on the Cape, Our water is just fine. I just was running the '57 KD2P and listening to it, and I think that Wash Arm spins faster than your KD12GWSP. I cleaned the Brass Bearing when I was restoring mine that the wash arm has that sits on the pump/sump.
What do you think ? Cutting a window from just underneath the timer/controls like a upside down U. This way you really wouldn't disturb anything. The starboard side (Whoops, I'm a mariner) would also be the perfect site for the light window and actually the left side as well. The fill flume is very high on the left top of the machine.
Would you be interested in bringing your jigsaw to the Cape for a weekend, and I would cook for you 4-18 meals a day ??/ (LOL). So good to hear from you. I'm flattered.
I think it's time to unleash the Forbidden Hydro Sweep. I know you did that with your Imperial DuaCycle, but I think it's time to do the Double Rack Spray Arms.
I'm soaking the filter right now to get that Shiffaffa off the screen. Other than that, she's mint. So which should be the "Very Nervous KitchenAid ?" The KDS-18 or the Newer KDS-20 ???
 
My parents have one in their house in black that they built back in 1981. Beautiful machine and works wonderfully. Still in use after all these years. Their kitchen still has the origional jenn air range and had the origional Gibson refrigerator until this summer when it died on them and they chose to get a new Samsung instead of repairing it.
 
I have thought the same thing about the window...

Would it make much difference where the detergent cup, and rinse agent dispenser would be relocated? I would imagine that the bottom left or right would be more ideal than the top. I noticed in your video of your KDS-17? Robert that it appeared to be on the Hydro-Sweep has a dedicated "hole" for the china and dispenser as far as water flow is concerned.
The only other issue is that the outer "finish metal" is very flimsy.

Why don't you really use your heads?

Here is the challenge, guys.. Stop cutting holes in the metal and see if you can't just fabricate a complete plexiglass door and remount all the components in that door! That way, you would be able to see ALL the workings of the machine, I will even let you have my 19 machine sans timer so you can use it to maybe take the metal supports out for the timer and switches and the latch. It still has the detergent dispenser in it as well as a rinse dispenser of the single hole variety. I am not going to restore that machine so I would rater see it parted out for the purpose noted above than just toss it out to the curb.

Let me know.. Anything from the 19 and up will fit in that door. The 18 used a double holed rinse dispenser, but then again, you would be drilling holes anyway so it would not matter. this would just provide the necessary support structure for the door components.

Let's see, you still need a 21 series..I have the custom and a Superba Monterrey! Surely the last of the really good machines!
But seriously, you wont be disappoionted with the 20.. remember, it will heat the water first to 140(a bit more)but the final rinse in the 18 is hotter as well as the 18 has longer main wash as well as the third rinse!

I anticipate some sibling rivalry soon!
 
I have a question. I have a KDC60A that cleans really well, but has been making the occasional whirring or grinding sound. Does this machine have a food disposal or just a filter?

The challenge I see with that Eddie is getting a piece of thicker glass cut in that shape and then sealing it properly to the door. I think a perfect square or rectangle might be easier, but if there is a will ;).

LOL Steve, now that would be a challenge, although I have thought about ways to do that. The problem with using Plexiglas over glass is that it gets cloudy over time with dishwasher detergents and expands and contracts more when heat is applied to it than glass does. I did do that four years ago, here is the link to that archived thread.

I love that video, and have had it on my computer for ages it seems!
I think Greg has an actual "show" door that Hobart made for the 18 series dishwashers. That would be interesting to watch.
Everyone talked that the 18 was so much better than the previous models because of the upper spray arm. However, when you watch it, the upper spray arm does not have all that much "force". It is more like a constant rinse. The power force continues to be from the lower Hydrosweep. It is like Hobart put the upper arm to keep up with the "competition".

Check your connections to the sump heater! Also connections to the rinse dispenser. Make sure that there is nothing leaking at both, or wires touching.
Unplug it if you can.
That is scary!
Don't run anything on the same circuit with this machine when it is running. It does pull quite a bit of power!

Well,Well, Well.

I installed the KDS20 today. Ran her throught the Empty Test for Leaks Cycle. Loading her up tonight, the Upper Rack got stuck. Jiggleling out look what I found. Never had this on the 18 or the 19. Check this out

Window on the side.

I always thought it would be neat to install a KitchenAid dishwasher at the end of a cabinet run and cut a window into the side of the machine away from the water inlet. The window might have to be narrow to fit between the steel struts.
 
Excellent idea!

Definitely a good idea and you can even finish it off with matching cabinetry! You would get a decent sized window and if you get anything before a 21 series, your tank would be thick and strong enough to carry the weight of the machine and the upper rack without a problem. The 20 was the last year for the full frame setup.
