Just wondering if anyone here has ever experienced this problem. I went to turn my KA stand mixer on this morning and the stir speed was what speed 10 used to be. SUPER fast. It does seem to get faster and faster as I raise the speeds, but it's way too fast on each speed.

It worked fine before I re-greased it yesterday... anyone have a clue as to what I could have messed up?

As always,

Thanks!

Greasing

I've had my Kitchenaid since the late 80's or early 90's, and it's never been greased. I don't use it a lot, mostly to make cakes and mash potatoes. Should it be greased soon?

James, not

until after someone figures out the run-away speed problem!

I don't know the innards on KAs that well, but run-away speed is usually caused by one of two things.
Either a sensor (mechanical or electronic) is not connected/out-of-alignment/broken or something has shorted, the short throwing the motor to highest speed.

KitchenAid Help

Go to the KitchenAid website kitchenaid.com. The have support people to help give you a quick response and assistance. I suspect the controller board need replacing, some thing a "do it yourselfer" can do. Kitchaid mixers are permanently lubricated for the life of the mixer, unless your mixer is over 40 yrs old and/or leaking. Never store a KitchenAid mixer in any position other that upright. The have been known to leak oil when packed and placed on their side.

A few possiblities!

If you have a newer(late 80's and newer) they had a phase control which controlled the speeds but still used a movable set of switch contacts controlled by a governor assembly to change the speeds. As you move the speed control lever back and forth, a connecting rod will move that plate closer or further away from the governor and change your speeds. It almost sounds like the linkage got messed up and then semi righted itself so you regained some control of the speeds.
Try to get a parts breakdown that matches your model number and you will see how it all goes together. I havent had my K45 apart in 25 years, now.. Converted it to the electronic speed control when they first came out and havent had to touch it since! Works so well. My cakes are always better than my wife's. Hers always have the consistency of sandpaper!

Let me know how you make out!

I had the same problem

I have a K5SS. I went to use it one day and all I had was High Speed. I took it to a local repair shop and he told me the Speed Govenor was toast. Popped a new one in for a total repair job of $40.00. Still running fine 4 years later.

Thanks for the responses. I played with the mixer a little more and it took off at warp speed and then I heard grinding and I'm sure the gears are stripped. I don't dare open it back up.

I went to Kohls and bought a Hamilton Beach Eclectrics for 181.00 bucks. I tried it out on some honey wheat bread yesterday and the head bounced all around... then the mixer started dancing (not walking) all over the counter... way too light weight. A shame, because I like the whimsical shape of it, and the dark black color matches my never used coffee maker (don't like coffee, just for guests, not that any ever stay over!), and my portable dishwasher. The HB will be going back for a refund!

I turn 25 tomorrow, so as a present to myself I'm going to drive to Tampa and buy a used Kitchen Aid Ultra (the model right above the Classic) for 50 bucks... found it on CL of course. It's white... I may paint it red or black... will probaby practice painting on the Classic before throwing it away.

I will NEVER take a screw out of a mixer again for the rest of my life. If it breaks I'll call a "man" do fix it properly!

Thanks for the advice though!

Here's a pic of the Classic beside the Hamilton Beach just for comparison. Soon, I'll have neither of them!

Hamilton Beach Eclectric

What looks like a good mixer there has some shortcomings in design and engineering. The beater nor the whisk do not reach to the bottom of the bowl. So scraping is always needed and you cannot whip 2 egg whites. It claims to have a powerful motor based upon wattage! Wattage is not a great way to rate a mixer's strength, it simply show how much electricity it uses (and wastes!). Some 100 watt motors of mixers of the 1950s are more powerful that some of these 200 watt portables that are being sold now. If I were starting out, I'd be looking for used appliance over most new ones I see.
