Oh Tom,
The cup racks and the Rinse Dispenser bring me two steps closer to the SU-70 which was the first dishwasher we ever owned and a fond memory of what was the best kitchen my family ever built. I'm especially fond of those cup racks because I was the one who figured out what they were for. For the first 5 years of use nobody in the house had any idea what they were for and, just like the Beverly Hillbillies, they puzzled over it but nobody but me bothered to look at the manual that my Father had carefully put into the household files in his study. Coincidentally, Mom bought that exact set of China that they used in the ad: a complete set of Finnish "Arabia" with the blue stripe. The cups fit perfectly on those cup racks just as they do in the ad. That machine held almost as much ware as the Maytag WU-600. I think all my Father cared about was that after a complete cycle, everything was sanitized.
Don't look for logic or performance here; this is about nostalgia and the beginning of a fascination that most of us share.
Remember that my Mother, like a lot of techno-phobic housewives of those days, pre- hand-washed every piece that went into that machine and as for the drying, I remember the grille on top belching steam at the end of the drying period so that everything was quite dry by the grand opening. And, BTW, after 12 years of heavy use the Plastisol interior was still in perfect condition.
