Let's see if Mom was right to pre-rinse or just wasting energy. Finally, I get to see if the GE impeller and "swirl-away" draining system can handle untreated dishes. A load of 4-day old stuff is transferred from the Daily Driver:

I choose to use the Cascade liquid because one of the chronic problems we had with the GE pull-out was that most of the powdered detergent frequently ended up caked inside the dispenser and didn't end up doing its job in the tank. The Cascade liquid formula, like the old Monsanto All, has no enzymes and has lots of lye so it seems to be most like the detergents that were formulated for these old machines with very quick wash cycles This machine doesn't have a rinse-injector so we'll see if that makes any difference here. My water is soft so I don't expect so.
Daily Dishes/ Mixed Loads Normal Soil, no Heavy Soil option on this machine. I used to love that Coral Pink button

And, yes, the sink matches the dishwasher; isn't that nice? Amazingly, the Maytag Unicouple fits perfectly; not a drop of water is leaking. And, pushing the lid shut we have CONTACT!!!!
This thing is LOUD, but I think re-attaching the front panel will muffle it a little bit. It's amazingly fast; the rinses average 4 minutes, two pre-, two after and the wash cycle is only 7 minutes long. The fill solenoid is FRIGHTENINGLY loud; like the one on the Norge spin activator. More of a CLANK! even then a SNAP!

POP goes the top!!! When the dial hits the "I" in "DRYING" the top pops open, and I guess this would never pass Consumer's Reports muster today, but the heating element stays on and the cycle dial continues to turn until you hear the detergent cup right itself and the machine clicks off. You can't really make it out in this picture, but the Calrod is actually glowing and that sucker is hot. A portion of a plastic cutting board that was hanging over the center mesh melted:
Well, the verdict is in. I'm giving it a 97 out of 100 for cleaning efficacy.
A fast, efficient little machine
I loaded this machine full with a variety of stuff that Mom would have NEVER allowed in her dishwasher because she didn't believe a machine could do the kind of scrubbing that a human hand and a Brillo pad could do. There were no particles of food or grit in any of the little pools of water in the cups and glasses that you see in the upper rack. Clean. The only failure was a rectangular Pyrex dish that had bread pudding baked in it. The dish was loaded on the side of the tank with 3 large plastic cups in front of it and there was still some egg custard spooge left in a couple of places around the rim of the dish. They were soggy and easy to wipe clean afterwards, but the spray missed them. The rest of the dishes and cutlery and the tank were clean. No water spots, no spooge.
The Mobile Maid held more conventional stuff than the Kenmore did, in terms of numbers of cups, glasses, and plates. The Kenmore held more silverware and more large, bulky items that would have blocked the small impeller in the GE. If I ever find our old SU-70, I will install it permanently and use it as one of two daily drivers. This Mobile Maid takes up too much room in the kitchen as it is and I wouldn't want to run it late at night, although the cycle is so fast it wouldn't keep anyone up for long. The washing/rinsing portions of the cycle only run for 22 minutes; add 16 minutes of dry time and it's all over in 38 minutes. It will make a great extra/party/utility dishwasher and the hook-up in the bathroom makes it easier than I expected. I love this machine.

I"m wondering if that bread pudding casserole dish would have gotten better cleaning if it had gone in one of the courners in the bottom rack. I"m sure the bottom rack is as full as the top rack, although it would have been nice to see it. Got me all excited. Haven't been near one of these in decades.

I feel that KAs, Maytags (Early to mid models) (Mid with the Wicked Tower) and Bow Ties will always in my opinion will be great cleaners from the get go. As in every machine,,, Racking Racking and Racking. La Regina is running with a "One Armed Wonder" BobLoad. It took 2 weeks to design this load from all angles. (LOL, but One Armed Wonders are always a Challenge to run and load to get everything hit in that Top Rack. You can definately NOT walk into a Cleanup (Sufficiently More than the Daily Double , and become the "TikiBar" effect. BobLoad the thing and not know what to do with a OneArmedWonder.
LaRegina (The Regency) just finished the washes and Rinses. When the Pump shuts off, It's DONE... Then the Soft Dryer kicks in, and it adds just enough humidity to the air for a Great Night's sleep.

Our BowTie really did a great job.
We ran ours at Supper Time Daily. Sometimes on Holidays 2-3 times a day.(My Mom was so Proud to have the "Princess". ) This was in 1960. We had 2 A/Cs AND a Dishwasher.Our whole family was envious. But My Dad worked Hard. Really Hard in the Restaurant/Bar business.
And on Sundays, it for the most part was a 2 Cycle Day, After Breaky because of the Dinner Prep, and afternoon and Dinner, so the evening's dinner was "Supper Load" and then Monday's Breaky got the First Load to start the week.

I have a 57 MM dishwasher, without the Power-Shower on the lid. I used it quite a bit when we were remodeling the kitchen. It's in storage now but I'm bringing it back over to the house to use over the holidays. We'll have fun putting that to the test with some big meals.
My grandmother had an early 60's bow-tie MM, one cycle - total BOL. She would have had a heart attack to see all that crammed in there, Ken! I used to get some pretty big loads in hers but then she'd come "edit" the load before it could be turned on. There was no plastic allowed as she was sure it would all end up as a gooey puddle at the bottom of the machine. I loved the smell of that machine when it was all done - the heat and clean scent of the dishes combined with the vinyl and plastisol - heaven for a little appliance-boy!

Um, what are the 3 red dots on the translucent plastic container at the right rear? Is a chickenpox, scarlet fever, poison ivy rash, the heartbreak of psoriasis or just food?
I remember and love that fragrance, Greg. Sometimes my KM wonder wash has a hint of that during dry. I loved going into the dark kitchen and watching the red heating element glowing down at the bottom of the tub. I would try to make water fall onto the Calrod to make the neat pop noise.

It's what's left of a "Stars and Stripes" graphic. A plastic drinking cup nicked from somebody's 4th picnic. For some reason, in my dotage, I've become fond of using plastic cups for drinking, probably because it's required for restaurant workers; glass is risky.
The smell that comes out of this dishwasher every time I open the lid is "Silly Putty" smell. I suspect that Firestone Plastisol shared much organic chemistry with that wonderful old toy. The guy who invented Silly Putty lived here in Madison CT in a wonderfully over-the-top Baroque mansion that some friends of mine lived in for a couple of years in the Eighties,right before it was torn down for the condos. They had two huge loving cups at the main entrance held by two naked stone babies that were overflowing with wads of Silly Putty. The Mansion was christened, during that incarnation, "La Villa Silli Puti".
I think one of the things I love most about this machine is the color combination of Petal Pink and Coral. It's what I remember most about that first dishwasher. I'd so like to find an Empress and a well-preserved version of our very rare SU-72 (like the Custom with the Plate Warmer button, but with an open dial instead). I still remember my Mother peeling the packing tape off of that groovy rinse agent dispenser (with a dipstick, yet!)and letting me help her pour the little glass bottle of Rinse-Dri into it. That was the last time that dispenser was filled.

Of course some spraying off was required as always is in a commercial dishmachine but the old Hobart washed it perfectly.
