Modern Washing Machines - the statistics!

Hey everyone,

It's hard these days to say "which is the most popular brand of washing machine?". So I thought I would do a little test. I went onto Rightmove, entered the first half of my postcode and randomly selected a sample of houses.

Out of the 310 properties for sale in my area, I filtered my search to 2 and 3 bedroomed houses and selected, at random, several of each different property type to look at. Of course, some did not have pictures where a washing machine was visible or they had utility rooms/garages which were not shown. Taking these out, I took a selection of 35 homes and tallied their choices of appliances. The results are below:

Hotpoint/Indesit - 12
Beko - 8
Bosch - 4
Zanussi - 3
Pre-Indesit Hotpoint - 3
Servis, AEG, Miele Whirlpool and Pre-Candy Hoover all had 1.

As I suspected, Hotpoint was the clear winner. There were no Hoover/Candy machines and no Haier or Vestel made machines, which surprised me.

Pretty interesting stuff. It'll be interesting to see stats for other areas of the country. Having spoken to other members and friends on here, it would seem different brands are more popular in different areas.

I second Jon's comment, I will do myself but Indesit are on Watchdog, again!

From the house's I have been in where I live Bosch,Hotpoint and Candy are probably the top three. I have seen about four Whirlpool Creations recently, and there are a few Bekos lurking round too, but will make a list like you have soon

The last time I went into no 23, and 15 were about 2-3 years ago though, may have changed.
We are all friendly, so go around each others houses for Parties/Meetings etc, so that's how I know!

I was viewing some reasonably high end rental properties (physically) over the last few days in Cork, Ireland and here's what I came up with from 12. (You can look on www.daft.ie ) if you want to have a browse, although a lot of the ads don't show a washing machine at all.

In a lot of newer apartments here the washing machine and dryer are often in a large storage closet area off the kitchen or in the hallway. They're increasingly not in the kitchen even in apartments.

(Bear in mind that in Ireland apartments aren't very popular anyway. Most people live in houses. It's not very similar to continental Europe in that respect. Also, a lot of homes here would have a utility room for the washer, dryer and some other stuff. Or, in some cases they're in the garage.

Laundry appliances are found in the kitchen in England more regularly than here in my experience anyway.

The brands I've come across in place I've rented here in the past have been quite varied:

Bosch features quite a bit, lower end Electrolux / Zanussis, Whirlpool and increasingly you see a lot of Beko machines.

I think landlords like Bosch as it's seen as 'reliable'.

I'm not sure what the legal situation is in the UK, but over here you have to provide individual washing machines and dryers or at least a washer/dryer in every unit.

Shared laundry facilities aren't legal anymore in residential rentals. Nor are any rentals which have shared bathrooms etc.

It's different over here. Landlords have to provide you with cooking facilities, but nothing else. Most landlords include a cooker and fridge. Rented apartments usually have intergrated washer-dryers or, as you mentioned, a washer in a cupboard off the hallway. But there is no legal requirement to provide one.

In my old flat, the washer was in the boiler cupboard off the hallway.

The statistics

I couldn't really rely on statistic based on random looking at houses, because it's not that accurate, you could come that 12 of 35 houses have a Miele, but we all know it isn't like that in sales...still good for fun, I'm always interested in statistics!

I know this thread is probably ment for the UK, but I'll share with you statistics with white goods:
Generally:
Number 1 most sold is Gorenje with 40% - 50% of the market (depending on the year)
Number 2 after gorenje is Candy which has nearly 20% - 30% (depending on the year)
Beko is getting bigger, but it's still nowhere hear Gorenje and Candy. But the 3rd place generally changes from quarter to quarter

In Washing machines, front loaders, the best selling is Gorenje.
In Washing machines, top loaders, the best selling is Whirlpool,.
In Washer dryers, Candy Alise's are holding almost 80% of that part of the market, as their only competition are Indesits (very unpopular and disliked with their service and quality here) and Siemens/Bosch which rather cost like 2 Candy's and have 2 years guarantee instead of Candy's 5. So it's strong bestseller there.
The Dishwashers - First one is Chinese Midea - They produce all machines for gorenje, 45cm machines for nearly all manufacturers except Bosch. Second is Candy, Third is Bosch

My Street

After what glenfieldmat did, I think I shall do the same!

1 - Hotpoint WF860 (I think) I only saw it once - it lives in a garage alongside a White Knight Dryer
2 - No idea
3 - Hoover Family Mega - a 7kg version of a Hoover Six with a chrome door - with a Creda Dryer from the mid - 90s.
4 - No idea
5 - Miele W1724 - I saw it being delivered last year and a Hoover Electron being taken away.
6 - No idea - This house sold last year and the previous owners had a Bosch Avantixx 7
7 - Bosch WFL2060 and a Hotpoint TVM560 - the TVM560 replaced a 9324
8 - No idea - but last week there was an Indesit IS70C and a White Knight Sensadry waiting for scrap collection.
9 - John Lewis washer which replaced a 9528 I think, also a White Knight dryer.
10 - Bosch WFB2004 - I think it's one of the Spanish ones.
11 - Hotpoint WMA11 and a Hotpoint TCM580 dryer - it replaced a Creda Condensor.
12 - Our House!
13 - No idea
14 - Bosch Clasixx and a Hotpoint TL61 in Natural Linen, they used to have the matching washer.
15 - No idea
16 - Zanussi ZW1220S - the last time I saw that was 3 years ago so it could be gone.
17 - Indesit WIL133 - this is a rented house and the previous tennants had their own washer, a Hoover Nextra.

20 - Bosch WFL2060

22 - Siemens Simawat in black with a chrome door.
23 - Merloni type Servis in GREEN!
24 - Hotpoint WF440 and Zanussi Condensor from 2003. I last saw these a few years ago and the owners have since got a new kitchen.

26 - Hotpoint WF220 and VTD00 - this house was sold reently and I had a nosey on the online estate agents.

Other machines I know locally are, Hotpoint WD64, Beko WM5140W, Candy GO682, various White Knight dryers, Hotpoint WMA32, AEG Lavamat...

i live in a block a four flats at the moment and here is what we have a have not done a thread regarding my new machines yet which im going to do when i can get some pics

@aquacycle just checked the minimum requirements over here for rental accommodation include (for appliances)

a) Minimum 4-ring hob (cooktop) and grill (broiler).
b) A cooker hood / extractor.
c) Fridge and Freezer or Fridge/Freezer combo unit.
d) Microwave oven.

The humble 'bedsit' i.e. really crappy studio apartment was consigned to history over here as they banned all sorts of old arrangements that allowed shared facilities between such 'apartments'.
It also significantly increased the basic requirements for heating, lighting, natural light, ventilation, insulation etc etc.

Landlords failing to comply can be fined €5000 (per offence) that's $6500 approx. and/or face up to 6 months in jail!

In certain rental sectors, we had a lot of rather poor apartments, especially aimed at low end student accommodation in older setups (often old house conversions) in some of the bigger cities/towns.

In general over here, most homes are owner-occupied, so the rental sector tended to have fairly lax regulation compared to say Germany where a much higher % of people rent.

That's changed a bit in very recent years, as a lot of people have opted to rent instead of buying due to falling property prices. There's no point in buying if you're going to lose money on the deal if the price drops.

So as more people rent, the politicians had to pay attention to continue to get elected, so more regulations went into place and tougher penalties for landlords who breech them.

However, it's always worth looking at what washing machines landlords actually buy as they're definitely picking brands that tend to last but aren't over priced.

Bosch seems to fit the bill quite a lot of the time as do some of the electrolux brands and oddly enough Whirlpool even though some of their cheaper machines aren't the nicest to use, they do tend to last quite well.
