If any of you have the opportunity, the tour of the John and Mabel Ringling mansion Ca'd'zan in Sarasota is a treat. In the kitchen are 1920s ranges, both gas and electric. The Westinghouse electric ranges had thermostatic oven controls. The cook set the temperature on a control and when the temperature pointer reached the setting, the current shut off by a switch like a circuit breaker. Then the food was put in the oven and the current was switched on again. The current had had to be restarted each time the temperature dropped. If you think that was work, the gas ranges next to the electric ones had three burners near floor level for each oven. The cook had to kneel on the floor to light the burners then adjust each burner to hold the temperature desired once it was reached. The house has an organ and a foyer where Sunday afternoon musicales were held. The guests were seated on the terrace between the house and the sea wall with the French Doors opened. People in the community would anchor their boats in the bay and listen to the music as it drifted out over the water. In keeping with the Venetian theme, Mabel had a gondola. There was an opening in the sea wall (an actual water gate)with steps down to where it was moored and where she would board it to be poled or rowed around the bay. Mabel used to travel to New York to attend performances at the Met. She died of cancer after only a few years in the house and he was alone in that house during the winter when the circus was not touring. The breakfast room has large, thick leather foot cushions under the table for keeping feet off the chilly floor in the morning. He could not pay the staff during the depression but they stayed because they at least had room and board. The estate was tied up for decades.

The art museum next door has a great collection of tapestries and other art built around a grand courtyard. It is all a beautiful monument to dreams realized and dashed. Unfortunately, they do not show the kitchen in this slideshow of the mansion. Sometimes places get so snooty that they stop including the kitchen on tours.

Stove

Wow, What a stove! You would need tons of coal and a good chimney. Don't forget to have it sit a bit away from the wall or have a wallboard protector. Fire is not a good thing to happen with this huge stove.
