Montgomery Ward Signature Washer and Propane Dryer - $100 (Perryville)

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It's been so long that I've forgotten, but were (S)Norge lids always hinged on the right?

Seeing as how it's a 3-speed machine, could this one be a "Her Majesty" model?  It seems short of knobs and settings for that level of status, but with Snorge (as opposed to Westinghouse) you can never be sure of anything.  Except . . .

What a cool set to find. The washer lids were reversible until sometime in the early 70's.

Burp-up replaced the recirculating filter in late 60's - 67-68-69 and these knobs would be from about that time. This looks like a lower end model, the Her Majesty line had large, angled panels like the TOL Norge counterparts from the same era. It's strange that this is a 3 speed washer though, I had a 69 Her Majesty that was three speed but didn't know it was available in any washer but that TOL.

Yeah, that Wards logo is what's throwing me.  I can't remember when that one was rolled out, but am thinking either side of 1970.  IIRC Our '67 Snorge pair still had the stylized MW surrounded by stars.  I know for certain it didn't have the logo seen on the subject machines.

This was an upper MOL model.  Neighbor across street had a similar model bought 1971 that was 3 speed.  Basically exact washer and features with different panel style. It replaced a fall 1964 MW.   MW had more features than comparable Norge--just like LK & Whirlpool;.

Nate

Hi - I worked for MW in 1967- first job. I haven't seen the logo since then - but thanks for posting it; reminded me of many good times with people I met there...all now living somewhere, lost in time.

Hi, Phil!

That is so neat! One of the things I plan to do when I create my functioning time machine is go back and visit a Montgomery Ward. I'm planning on dragging Ralph with me, but then I'll take him to Sears afterward, so we can have popcorn and a Lady Kenmore. ;-)

Indeed!

For added terror, drag me directly to the Bargain Room, preferably in the San Leandro Wards.  The Oakland Wards bargain basement would probably make me curl up into a ball.

1967 to 1980's - The Monkey Ward Slide

Nate - it was a brand new store - can't find a photo of it but I attached a B&W photo of the K-Mart, adjacent to it. I worked from the day it opened til the following spring when my shoe sales buddies would say, "where are the customers? bring a bowling ball or something, these isles are empty!" My co-worker buddies were alot of fun, minus the old-maid of a girl.My manager, John Robinson, was cool, too. This MWards Southfield, Mi. store went from sparkling clean and orderly in 1967 to completely wrung out by the 80's. I remember the smallish hardware, auto, and appliance departments as I walked out the garden-patio doors, which faced the setting sun.Everything was neat and well-stocked. Just out of curiosity, after living in the Grand Rapids area and then after California, I dropped in to check out the store in the 1980's. I left thinking, "why don't they just put it out of its misery and close it?" It looked like a bad rummage sale. Racks of messy , unorganized clothes, the hardware department was gone, as was the appliance department and all the well-displayed products. The distinctive decor, like the original sign, was also gone. By the early 90's they closed the store and partitioned the square footage for MC Sports and Office Depot. By 2002, the mall that MW was connected to, was demolished and a new open-air mall was created. (sorry Ralph). The way that store went down was not a graceful ending. While I wasn't as much of a fan of MW's, as Sears, the logo reminded me...just 18 years old, first job, shy and learned how to greet people(vs. hiding behind the cash register, lol).

I hope the Bargain Room in San Leandro Wards has better goods than what Wards was selling on the main floor back in the 80's. :-) Oakland Wards sounds scary. lOl.

Anyone know....

...how difficult it would be to convert from Propane to NG? I've heard something about changing the orifice(?) but don't really understand? is this the dryer that emits much lint into the house?

As these are not too far from me, and others don't seem interested, maybe will buy if can be done reasonably.
