Montgomery Ward

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

And did you know for a time Montgomery Ward was owned by Mobil Oil?
I think another reason Dixie Square Mall failed was the area it was located in.
Just horrible.

Some malls just have to be redeveloped to survive. Meyerland Park here in Houston was one such mall. It used to be an internal mall and they redeveloped it into an external mall. All entrances to the stores are now from the outside, rather than the inside.

Franksdad:

What malls do you recall living so close to Greenville other than McAlister Square Mall, Greenville Mall and the Haywood Mall? What were the popular shopping center including strip malls in the 1960's?

Malls

Do you remember the Bell Tower Mall? They had a Woolco and an Edwards Department Store. Edwards was phased out when Wal-Mart came to the Upstate. I don't remember the other stores and it wasn't as nice as McAlister Square. Bell Tower Mall was located on the old Furman University campus (before they moved the university to North Greenville). Since Bell Tower Mall was in a bad neighborhood there were a lot of robberies, purse snatches, and rapes at Bell Tower Mall so it fizzled out quickly. Greenville County remodeled Bell Tower Mall and moved all Greenville County offices there in the late 80's. Wade Hampton Mall on Wade Hampton Blvd. was really swanky back in the late 50's and early 60's. There was a Grant's, Belk-Simpson, and other stores. It was made just like the Richland Mall in Columbia with all the stores around a central plaza and the sidewalks were all covered. The construction company my dad worked for built the Mall Cinema theatre there at Wade Hampton Mall. All the men who worked for Reese Construction (where my dad worked) got free passes for themselves and thier families to go to the opening night of the theatre in 1965. The movie, The Yellow Rolls Royce was the first movie played there. I don't remember the movie as I was just 10 but I remember going and feeling like a big shot! "My daddy built this theatre!" For years the Mall Cinema showed $1.00 movies and I went to tons of them when I was young, dating, and in college. A bunch of us would drive over from Clemson to go to moives at the Mall Cinema. It was fun. McAlister Square was the demise of Wade Hampton Mall. Now Bob Jones University uses the mall for a bible school and office complex. Lewis Plaza was on Augusta Road. Mama used to go there to that Belk-Simpson store and the Plaza Drug Store. The closing of the Plaza Lunch Counter closed several years ago made all the local print and television news. There used to be an A&P at Lewis Plaza also. There is still the Plaza Hardware Store there facing Augusta Road It is either an Ace or True Value Hardware store now.

Bell Tower Mall

Let me share this.... since there were a lot of purse snatchings, package stealing, etc. at Bell Tower Mall one of the ledgends that floated around Greenville when Bell Tower Mall was open was a woman went into the ladie's room at Woolco, had a miscarriage, placed the fetus in a Woolco bag, and placed the bag in the parking lot. A man ran up to grab the bag, looked inside, screamed and fainted and was still passed out cold when the police arrived. Truth or ledgend? Either way I always thought that was a great story!

That's like the woman who was taking a package of her poor dead little dog to be buried, and was robbed on the subway, or some similar scenario. The thief got his surprise big time! I've wanted to have a wrapped Christmas gift in my unlocked car, loaded with presents from my cats!

Ohhhh! Tootsie Rolls! :o)

Have you ever seen one of the litter box cakes? It's a typical "dirt cake" with in a litter box (lined, of course) layered with graham cracker crumbs and dotted with rolled up tootsie rolls served with a sanitized litter scoop.

Uhhh.........no.................

Is it a real cake?

Litter box cake

It really is...and it's good too! I don't know why I can't post anything today. Google "litterbox cake" and you'll find all versions and pictures of the recipe for litter box cake. You can also find recipes for dirt cake which you serve in a sanitized flower pot with gummy worms. My sister used to make dirt cake for our family dinners years ago. I begged my sister to make a litter box cake because my brother had a very "weak" stomach and I wanted to laugh at him when he would run outside and start throwing up thinking we were stupid enough to serve Callie and Big Baby's litter box for dessert. I would have caught "heck" for that but it would have been worth it!
