BELLFLOWER, Ca. - A mother at Kaiser Medical Center in Bellflower gave birth to octuplets on Monday morning, doctors said. It is believed to be only the second time in history that live octuplets have been born and survived more than a few hours. The mother, who did not want to be identified, delivered six boys and two girls via cesarean section at 30 weeks' gestation, Kaiser doctors said.

The first, a boy, was born at 10:43 a.m. and the last, also a boy, was born at 10:48 a.m. The number of babies came as a surprise - the doctors were expecting seven. "Lo and behold, after we got to Baby G we were surprised by the discovery of Baby H," said Dr. Karen E. Maples, Kaiser's chief of obstetrics and gynecology, who helped deliver the babies. Dr. Harold M. Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine at the hospital, said "Baby H" was overlooked in the ultrasound. "It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven babies," Henry said. "Ultrasound doesn't show you everything."

Born nine weeks premature, the heaviest baby was 3 pounds, 4 ounces and the lightest was 1 pound, 8 ounces. All were in stable condition, though two had breathing problems and were placed on ventilators, doctors said. The delivery had been "dry rehearsed" several times and involved a team of 46 people, doctors said. The team saw it as a good sign when the first boy was born kicking and crying, Henry added.

Hospital officials would not release any information about the mother, including her name, condition or whether she used fertility drugs. They also did not release any photos of the newborns on Monday. Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist who helped in the delivery, said the next 72 hours will be a critical period for the newborns. They will probably remain in the hospital for least two months, depending on any possible complications, he said.

The mother, whose babies added up to nearly 18 pounds, checked into the hospital in her 23rd week of pregnancy and gave birth seven weeks later. Gupta said she is planning on breastfeeding. "She's a very strong woman, she should be able to care for all of them," he said.
The first live-born octuplets were born in Houston in 1998, and one baby died about a week later. The surviving siblings - girls Ebuka, Gorom, Chidi, Chima and Echerem, and their brothers Ikem and Jioke - celebrated their 10th birthday in December. Their parents, Nkem Chukwu and Iyke Louis Udobi, said they are astonished and grateful that their children have grown up to be healthy and active youngsters who are now in the fourth grade.

Chukwu told The Associated Press that the parents of the newest octuplets have much to look forward to. "Just enjoy it. It's a blessing, truly a blessing," Chukwu said. "We'll keep praying for them."

This is the second higher-order multiple birth at Kaiser Bellflower in a year. Last August, 23-year-old Whittier resident Vanessa Duarte gave birth to quadruplets. The babies, two boys and two girls, were born healthy.

BELLFLOWER OCTUPLETS
Here's the birth order, gender and weight of each of the Bellflower octuplets, according to Kaiser doctors:
10:43 a.m. - Baby A, boy, 2 pounds, 11 ounces
10:44 - Baby B, girl, 2 pounds, 12 ounces
10:45 - Baby C, boy, 3 pounds, 4 ounces
10:45 - Baby D, girl, 2 pounds, 8 ounces
10:46 - Baby E, boy, 1 pound, 8 ounces
10:47 - Baby F, boy, 2 pounds, 12 ounces
10:47 - Baby G, boy, 1 pound, 15 ounces
10:48 - Baby H, boy, 2 pounds, 11 ounces

Oh, there's MUCH more!

I don't know what to say....

"The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization, is not married and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager, her mother said.

Angela Suleman told The Associated Press she was not supportive when her daughter, Nadya Suleman, decided to have more embryos implanted last year.

"It can't go on any longer," she said in a phone interview Friday. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."

Nadya Suleman, 33, gave birth Monday in nearby Bellflower. She was expected to remain in the hospital for at least a few more days, and her newborns for at least a month.

A spokeswoman at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center said the babies were were progressing daily, with all eight breathing unassisted and being tube-fed.

While her daughter recovers, Angela Suleman is taking care of the other six children, ages 2 through 7, at the family home in Whittier, about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

She said she warned her daughter that when she gets home from the hospital, "I'm going to be gone."

Angela Suleman said her daughter always had trouble conceiving and underwent in vitro fertilization treatments because her fallopian tubes are "plugged up."

There were frozen embryos left over after her previous pregnancies and her daughter didn't want them destroyed, so she decided to have more children.

Her mother and doctors have said the woman was told she had the option to abort some of the embryos and, later, the fetuses. She refused.

Her mother said she does not believe her daughter will have any more children.

"She doesn't have any more (frozen embryos), so it's over now," she said. "It has to be."

Nadya Suleman wanted to have children since she was a teenager, "but luckily she couldn't," her mother said.

"Instead of becoming a kindergarten teacher or something, she started having them, but not the normal way," he mother said.

Her daughter's obsession with children caused Angela Suleman considerable stress, so she sought help from a psychologist, who told her to order her daughter out of the house.

"Maybe she wouldn't have had so many kids then, but she is a grown woman," Angela Suleman said. "I feel responsible, and I didn't want to throw her out."

Little psychological research has been conducted on the reasons some mothers seem hooked on repeated pregnancies. David Diamond, a co-director for the Center for Reproductive Psychology in San Diego, said mothers can be drawn to repeat pregnancies for a number of reasons, with some finding the experience so satisfying they choose to become surrogates.

Diane G. Sanford, a psychologist and author specializing in women's reproductive mental health, said while she doesn't know much about Nadya Suleman's background, women that have obsessive-compulsive disorder can become fixated on different obsessions.

"Her obsession centers around children, having children and being a mother," she said. "To what degree are her esteem and identity based on being a mom, and why has this from a young age been such a preoccupation of hers?"

Yolanda Garcia, 49, of Whittier, said she helped care for Nadya Suleman's autistic son three years ago.

"From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all," Garcia told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?'" she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."

Garcia said she did not ask for details.

Nadya Suleman holds a 2006 degree in child and adolescent development from California State University, Fullerton, and as late as last spring she was studying for a master's degree in counseling, college spokeswoman Paula Selleck told the Press-Telegram.

Her fertility doctor has not been identified. Her mother told the Los Angeles Times all the children came from the same sperm donor but she declined to identify him.

Birth certificates reviewed by The Associated Press identify a David Solomon as the father for the four oldest children. Certificates for the other children were not immediately available.

Angela Suleman told reporters Friday that doctors implanted far fewer than eight embryos, but they multiplied. Experts said this could be possible since Nadya Suleman's system has likely been hyperstimulated for years with fertilization treatments and drugs.

The news that the octuplets' mother already had six children sparked an ethical debate. Some medical experts were disturbed to hear that she was offered fertility treatment, and troubled by the possibility that she was implanted with so many embryos.

"You should always shoot for one," said Dr. Marcelle Cedars, a professor and director of reproductive health at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center, who worried about the increased risk of potential health complications for the babies.

Others worried that she would be overwhelmed trying to raise so many children and would end up relying on public support.

"This woman could not comprehend the ramifications of having eight children of the same age at the same time," said Judith Horowitz, a Parkland, Fla.-based psychologist and author who works with couples on fertility issues. "After Pampers stops delivering the free diapers, then what?"

The eight babies _ six boys and two girls _ were delivered by cesarean section weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces. Forty-six physicians and staff assisted in the deliveries.

Lawd have mussy. Will mom and dad make it till the kids are 20 y.o., sanity intact?

So do you think one or both of them will be sterilized?

At under 2 pounds, a few of these babies will be lucky to survive,

IMO fertility drugs are child abuse.

They will do a reality show with them and they will be mega-millionaires in just a few years.
Can you imagine all of the grand-children from that crowd!

Now there's a carbon foot print.

...well, I am sure she has good health insurance and the taxpayer won't have to participate. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

LOL Rocketwarrior at least she had those babies in January, If they do have health insurance with a "Team" of 46 MD's and Nurses, i feel certain they have hit their "Max out of pocket". I do wish the very best to these babies and their parents.

Breeding

I am in favor of more responsible breeding. At least China understands the problem - now if they could just fix the gender bias.

Look what I can do!

So they asked her lead doctor yesterday,'were fertility drugs' used. He said, "we are not permitted to comment on private details".
Next, they asked "what are the odds of such a birth without use of fertility enhancing drugs?" He answered, 'several hundred millions to one'.

I wish the kids well, but with parents like that, they're off to a tough start in the world.

And yes, their financial future is assured. Every depression has its triplets, quintuplets or so...hope there is no correlation between -uplets and depth of depression!

They are not going public, and don't wish to be identified. I at first thought if you are going to have a litter, then let the appliance companies help you out with new washers and let Extreme Home makeover get you a new house.

Then my dear mother suggested, "I bet they are illegal."

The thing that made me giggle was "The mother plans to nurse all the babies." A St. Benard couldn't nurse eight hungery babies. You had better get some donations quick.

Now Mrs Duggar should have XEROX tattoo'd across her for

It's pretty amazing this local woman gave birth to 8 at one time and I wish them all the best with the children's health and there lives as they raise them.

=============

You may have already heard about the Duggar family, since there is a reality show that follows their every move on TLC. (Like we don't have ENOUGH of these blasted shows!)

This mormon family in Utah (of course), now with 18..... yes I said EIGHTEEN children (one at a time, thank you) seems to be hell-bent on re-populating (or over populating) the Earth by them selves! In my eyes it appears that AS SOON as she squeezes a baby out, he is on her getting her pregnent AGAIN!

COME ON Jim Bob, put a sock on it next time!!!

"I bet they are illegal."

Why didnt I think of that? Here i was thinking that she was a stressed but sensible mother who didnt want herself and her fragile nine-week premature infants bothered with cameras and reporters and interviews.

~Breeding. I am in favor of more responsible breeding.

Concrete and two stitches.
And for the "mens" a clip on/of the Vas deferens.

Mandatory if you are illegal or on welfare.

(ducks and runs)

They did a bit on the ethics of this on ABC news tonight and the consensus was that is unethical. It puts everyone at risk. During invitro or other processes they can fairly easily see how many eggs are viable and implanting more that 4 fertilized eggs is unheard of.

I doubt they are illegal, I don't know how many in that situation would have the money to all the various fertility measures out there. I'll go with wanting to protect their privacy.

Hello planned parenthood? I need a pregnancy terminated.

Heard it's a single mother with six other kids.

If there are any fertility drugs involved, I'd say that's criminal.

She's gonna need aspirin. Lot's of aspirn, to put and keep a pill between her knees and make sure it doesn't fall.

Toggles you heard right...she has 6 other kids and lives with her parents. When I heard that I thought gawd what was she thinking and what are her parents thinking. And yes she was on fertility drugs. Its almost criminal plus from what they said she isnt working ..how can she now with that litter to feed ...and on top of that she plans on breast feeding. My nipples are just aching in pain at the thought of having a kid clamped onto them. Never mind 8 of them. They said on the View it would take her 4 hours for each feeding...now I dont know how much milk a woman can produce but my gawd talk about feeling like a cow.
Plus they are not saying who the potent father is...thats one hell of a shot in the dark.

.thats one hell of a shot in the dark

(cough)

Why the hell would a woman with six kids take fertility meds?

Leaches

Some people get out of bed, go to work, act sensibly and lead constructive, contributing lives. They don't seek the spotlight. They live with their pain. They live with their joy. They value being part of the solution or at least part of the stability. They have reasonable goals. They try to budget. They help. You know, like my children.

And then some people......

Our Tax Dollars at Work

Hey, any Californians out there who have the data to know [leaving aside the Medi-Caid (or Medi-Cal or whatever) for the health costs] -- to give us an idea about how much of a monthly check she was receiving for the first 6 and how much she will get for this litter? Maybe her mother keeps her around for the checks.

The fact is that she's plain irresponsible...fertility drugs after 6 children?? That's just plain dangerous. What doctor would do such a thing?

I think the mother has serious psychological issues. Single and already with 6 kids and she takes fertility drugs? I lump her in the same category as women (it's never men) who end up with like 92 cats in their house. It's an addiction like any other, IMO. Perhaps 8 new babies at once will cure her. And if these are all going to be welfare babies, then EVERYONE should be outraged. Her behavior is nothing short of criminally irresponsible. Somehow I get the feeling I won't be a bit surprised by information regarding her cultural background and immigration status when it's finally divulged.

Women desperately need something to love and nurture (read: control); without it they say they feel "empty".

So as I keep saying fill it up with concrete.

So many kids may be a sign that something is very seriously mentally wrong or lacking. (How much "love" do you need to give and get, already?) EVERYONE needs to be needed, but this is ridiculous.

In my little subculture one's moods, thoughts, impulses and feelings need to be controlled if one is to say they are civilized. The rider controls the horse. Not the other way around.
