BELLFLOWER, Ca. - A mother at Kaiser Medical Center in Bellflower gave birth to octuplets on Monday morning, doctors said. It is believed to be only the second time in history that live octuplets have been born and survived more than a few hours. The mother, who did not want to be identified, delivered six boys and two girls via cesarean section at 30 weeks' gestation, Kaiser doctors said.

The first, a boy, was born at 10:43 a.m. and the last, also a boy, was born at 10:48 a.m. The number of babies came as a surprise - the doctors were expecting seven. "Lo and behold, after we got to Baby G we were surprised by the discovery of Baby H," said Dr. Karen E. Maples, Kaiser's chief of obstetrics and gynecology, who helped deliver the babies. Dr. Harold M. Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine at the hospital, said "Baby H" was overlooked in the ultrasound. "It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven babies," Henry said. "Ultrasound doesn't show you everything."

Born nine weeks premature, the heaviest baby was 3 pounds, 4 ounces and the lightest was 1 pound, 8 ounces. All were in stable condition, though two had breathing problems and were placed on ventilators, doctors said. The delivery had been "dry rehearsed" several times and involved a team of 46 people, doctors said. The team saw it as a good sign when the first boy was born kicking and crying, Henry added.

Hospital officials would not release any information about the mother, including her name, condition or whether she used fertility drugs. They also did not release any photos of the newborns on Monday. Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist who helped in the delivery, said the next 72 hours will be a critical period for the newborns. They will probably remain in the hospital for least two months, depending on any possible complications, he said.

The mother, whose babies added up to nearly 18 pounds, checked into the hospital in her 23rd week of pregnancy and gave birth seven weeks later. Gupta said she is planning on breastfeeding. "She's a very strong woman, she should be able to care for all of them," he said.
The first live-born octuplets were born in Houston in 1998, and one baby died about a week later. The surviving siblings - girls Ebuka, Gorom, Chidi, Chima and Echerem, and their brothers Ikem and Jioke - celebrated their 10th birthday in December. Their parents, Nkem Chukwu and Iyke Louis Udobi, said they are astonished and grateful that their children have grown up to be healthy and active youngsters who are now in the fourth grade.

Chukwu told The Associated Press that the parents of the newest octuplets have much to look forward to. "Just enjoy it. It's a blessing, truly a blessing," Chukwu said. "We'll keep praying for them."

This is the second higher-order multiple birth at Kaiser Bellflower in a year. Last August, 23-year-old Whittier resident Vanessa Duarte gave birth to quadruplets. The babies, two boys and two girls, were born healthy.

BELLFLOWER OCTUPLETS
Here's the birth order, gender and weight of each of the Bellflower octuplets, according to Kaiser doctors:

10:45 - Baby C, boy, 3 pounds, 4 ounces
10:45 - Baby D, girl, 2 pounds, 8 ounces
10:46 - Baby E, boy, 1 pound, 8 ounces
10:47 - Baby F, boy, 2 pounds, 12 ounces

Lawd have mussy. Will mom and dad make it till the kids are 20 y.o., sanity intact?

So do you think one or both of them will be sterilized?

At under 2 pounds, a few of these babies will be lucky to survive,

IMO fertility drugs are child abuse.

Now there's a carbon foot print.

...well, I am sure she has good health insurance and the taxpayer won't have to participate. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

LOL Rocketwarrior at least she had those babies in January, If they do have health insurance with a "Team" of 46 MD's and Nurses, i feel certain they have hit their "Max out of pocket". I do wish the very best to these babies and their parents.

Breeding

I am in favor of more responsible breeding. At least China understands the problem - now if they could just fix the gender bias.

Look what I can do!

So they asked her lead doctor yesterday,'were fertility drugs' used. He said, "we are not permitted to comment on private details".
Next, they asked "what are the odds of such a birth without use of fertility enhancing drugs?" He answered, 'several hundred millions to one'.

I wish the kids well, but with parents like that, they're off to a tough start in the world.

And yes, their financial future is assured. Every depression has its triplets, quintuplets or so...hope there is no correlation between -uplets and depth of depression!

They are not going public, and don't wish to be identified. I at first thought if you are going to have a litter, then let the appliance companies help you out with new washers and let Extreme Home makeover get you a new house.

Then my dear mother suggested, "I bet they are illegal."

The thing that made me giggle was "The mother plans to nurse all the babies." A St. Benard couldn't nurse eight hungery babies. You had better get some donations quick.

Now Mrs Duggar should have XEROX tattoo'd across her for

It's pretty amazing this local woman gave birth to 8 at one time and I wish them all the best with the children's health and there lives as they raise them.

=============

You may have already heard about the Duggar family, since there is a reality show that follows their every move on TLC. (Like we don't have ENOUGH of these blasted shows!)

This mormon family in Utah (of course), now with 18..... yes I said EIGHTEEN children (one at a time, thank you) seems to be hell-bent on re-populating (or over populating) the Earth by them selves! In my eyes it appears that AS SOON as she squeezes a baby out, he is on her getting her pregnent AGAIN!

COME ON Jim Bob, put a sock on it next time!!!

"I bet they are illegal."

Why didnt I think of that? Here i was thinking that she was a stressed but sensible mother who didnt want herself and her fragile nine-week premature infants bothered with cameras and reporters and interviews.

~Breeding. I am in favor of more responsible breeding.

Concrete and two stitches.
And for the "mens" a clip on/of the Vas deferens.

Mandatory if you are illegal or on welfare.

(ducks and runs)

They did a bit on the ethics of this on ABC news tonight and the consensus was that is unethical. It puts everyone at risk. During invitro or other processes they can fairly easily see how many eggs are viable and implanting more that 4 fertilized eggs is unheard of.

I doubt they are illegal, I don't know how many in that situation would have the money to all the various fertility measures out there. I'll go with wanting to protect their privacy.

Hello planned parenthood? I need a pregnancy terminated.

Heard it's a single mother with six other kids.

If there are any fertility drugs involved, I'd say that's criminal.

She's gonna need aspirin. Lot's of aspirn, to put and keep a pill between her knees and make sure it doesn't fall.

Toggles you heard right...she has 6 other kids and lives with her parents. When I heard that I thought gawd what was she thinking and what are her parents thinking. And yes she was on fertility drugs. Its almost criminal plus from what they said she isnt working ..how can she now with that litter to feed ...and on top of that she plans on breast feeding. My nipples are just aching in pain at the thought of having a kid clamped onto them. Never mind 8 of them. They said on the View it would take her 4 hours for each feeding...now I dont know how much milk a woman can produce but my gawd talk about feeling like a cow.
Plus they are not saying who the potent father is...thats one hell of a shot in the dark.
