Moving a stacked unit

Hey everyone...

nice little site you got here.

So I just moved into a new place and I inherited a Frigidaire Gallery Heavy Duty. Its a stacked unit.

I need to move it from the 2nd floor to the basement.

So I figured it would be best to seperate the two units by undoing the bolts that hold the two units together.

It went really smoothly on the left side of the unit (viewed from the back).

Unfortunately the right side is obscured by the dryer fan unit making it really difficult to remove these bolts.

So it left me thinking, is this the only way to do it?

Anyone have tips ??

No not I, sorry.

Personally, I would have strapped it to a hand-truck as delivery people move refrigerators.

Most of the weight should theoretically be at the bottom making it easy to move on such a hand-truck.

Hi! Hexsprite, first of all, Welcome to the Auto Washer Club Site. If I'm thinking about what you saying correctly, you might have to take the Front of the Dryer apart to get to the Bolt{s} near the Blower Assembly. After you are able to get that/those Bolts out, you wouldn't really have to Bolt it on that side again, but you might want to get some thicker Foam Insulation {similar to Weather-Stripping to cushion that side from Vibrations}. The Bolt{s} on the Left side should be sufficient enough, besides the Lock-Down Clips at the Rear to secure the Units together again, in their Stacked position for use again, assuming you want them Stacked again.

If you should happen to have the Shipping Bracket's around someplace, it might be a good idea to use them, given the length of Stairs that you will no doubt be going down, from your 2nd Floor, to the Basement. If you don't have the Shipping Brackets available, you might want to check with a local Appliance Dealer, that Sells the newer "FridGeMore" Stackable Washers and Dryers, to see if they might have some Shipping Brackets that you might even be able to borrow, for your Moving of the Machines.

I've got a Mid-1980's Gibson Front-Load Washer and a White/Westinghouse Dryer, that I've got Stacked and I only Bolted at the area, behing the small Front-Access Panel, due to that reason, of the Blower Assemblies location, but I've never actually used the Weather-Stripping and they don't seem to Vibrate at all. If they do happen to start Vibrating, I will then take the Front off the Dryer and put some Weather-Stripping on the Side and Front areas of the Cabinet, between the 2-Machines Top/Bottom areas, to prevent any Vibration.

I hope that this helps you out, although someone else might have some other thoughts/ideas that I'm not aware of, or of otherwise of my ideas for taking apart and Re-Stacking the Units.

howdy hex

are you moving a f/l stacked with a dryer or a t/l with the dryer bolted on top? Somehow from your post I visulized a t/l washer with a dryer on top "laundry center". Hope I didnt jump the gun with anyone but i think you received front loading washer answers. Of course they may still be the Right answers. It's late for me, hope this made sense. If it is a t/l washer I dont think i would take them apart. Experts, your thoughts?

Well, I guess some of us assumed that you had a Front-Load Washer, with the Stacked Dryer. If this is the case that you have a Top-Load Washer, unless it were a Maytag Unit, I don't think that the other Brands of Stacked Units, with a Top-Load Washer can be detached from each other for Moving.

As mentioned, you will have to use what is called a Refrigerator Hand Truck, with a Strap to secure around the Unit, to transport it from your 2nd Floor to the Basement, relocation.

I hope that this clears up any mis-understanding of the assumption of the Washer being a Front-Load Washer.
