Started to trim the lawn today with my 20 year old Honda like,
I normally would, and it blew it's main oil seal on the bottom
of the crankshaft. Not good, but fixable.

So now what to do??

Went back to the shed...

and pulled out my favorite Lawnboy.

Have not used it in about three years.

Added fresh gas and three tugs on the rope and
we're off and mowing again!

She's not the prettiest girl at the party, but still runs
like she should. I think I'll keep her out for a while, at
least until the Honda gets fixed.

It's a model 7254 from 1965. Bought it for $20 at a garage
sale a block away about 5 years ago. Needed minor maintenance.

Luv those OMC Lawnboys!

The Good Old Days

I loved 2 cycle engine Lawn Boy mowers. Quiet, easy to start, dependable and light weight. The grass catcher worked great but the support stick was quirky. I have a newer Lawn Boy with a Honda engine that is a stellar machine but I'd buy a new mower tomorrow if they revived the old style design with magnesium deck and 2 cycle engine.

Gardening?

Something I have sometimes wondered about concerns the use of the word "yard" in American English where we from UK would refer to it as a "garden". Do you also have a different name for work done in the yard, mowing lawns, trimming hedges, pruning shrubs etc. or do you call it gardening?

I think most of us would just say "yard work". Now we do use the term "gardening", but that is usually reserved for people who have a hobby of cultivating flowers or even the installation of a garden in a yard. To us a "garden" is where you grow your own vegetables or flowers.

When you say the word "yard" it could be any place around your house. We use "Front Yard" for the open space in front of your house and "Back Yard" for the area at the rear of your house.

White Lawn Boy!!

My Dad bought one just like it new the summer of 65, right around the time I was born, Sept 3, It was the best ever and lasted long enough for me to mow with it!

*I* was the "lawn boy" and dad bought this POS below in 1957. It taught me two things. One, how to take engines apart, because it had to be taken apart every time I tried to start it. And two, only buy lawn equipment with Briggs engines.

when your lawn is 6 to 8 inches tall

Finally got to mow the lawn/field today after almost 2 weeks of rain. If others have run into this and are bagging the grass you know how long this takes and how many times you have to empty the bag and barrels. I have had to do this 3 times this year and helps cut down on the time and amount of grass to pick up. I first mow the lawn mulching it up. Once completed the mow again in a different direction with the bag on. I only have to empty 2 or 3 times because the grass has been cut and mulched so it still cleans it up but takes a lot less time than starting and stopping every ten feet. Hope this helps someone out and cuts down on the time and effort
Jon
