who has cracked one of these open? have 2 dif books and as usual they dont tell you everything. this baby has a prob with the brake when the spin ends and the brake kicks in the tub does stop as it should but then the trans locks, you can yank on the trans case and unlock it but it will do the same on the next spin so im thinkin the brake or spring in the upper end. any ideas boys?? i want to tear into this but cant get the nuts off

Chris it does sound like the Clutch Spring is binding and probably is warped and needs replacing. Are you having a problem removing that nut at the front of the picture? Did you push down the tab on the retaining star washer below it?

yea

found the star washer and bent that back but cant figure out what direction to turn the nut..its way tight and not sure if i should use a hammer on the breaker bar or what. then there is the prob of the bigger nut on the upper end assy. where can one find a spring????

Chris as far as I remember that is a standard nut, so its lefty-loosie to remove it. Take a standard hex wrench and tap it with a hammer counter-clockwise to remove it. Then you are going to need to remove the bigger nut above. There is a special tool to remove that nut, but I've done it many times without the tool. That also turns counter-clockwise to remove. The spring will be in the mechanism above that.

well

well robert was right it does come apart ha ha..so now it all apart on the floor it looks good and feels good but still not sure what the spring is really supposed to look like, the book talks about tiny gaps can cause probs, and i think i see a gap so....now the hunt is on for a spring. oh and seems that rapid dry on ebay (the one with the brake issue) will be comming to st louis ha..i dont think il ever get the car back in the garage now. gees what if i win that other one too..i must have lost my mind

Hi Chris, Looks like you are having fun there!!! Glad that you have some new toys to play with and challenge you!!LOL Terry

Sounds like time to get on the phone and start calling the parts houses. Usually after a dozen or so calls I find what I want-----of course each call is a battle to get those parts house employees to physically get up and go look on the shelves! Most will just try to "blow you off" with a "we no longer stock that item" spiel. As soon as they hang up I call back and get the owner on the phone----that usually works.

I have found that most of the parts houses still have a good bit of vintage parts spread around-----but they are NOT in their computer inventories any longer. They usually have a corner or a couple of shelves set aside for them, and it requires someone to go and physically look for them------heaven forbid!
