My 36 Year-Old KitchenAid KWI-200 Disposer....

.....died a noisy death a few days ago.
It has been having issues for the last year or two.
Sometimes, it would just hum when turned on and I would have to repeatedly turn it on and off to get it going.
Last week, it was running as if unbalanced (which it sometimes did when something got stuck on the cutting wheel).
I put a lemon into the disposer and in seconds, it made a loud metallic noise and jammed solid.
I suspect one of the swiveling cutting "hammers" broke loose.
I can't complain as the disposer was installed January 28, 1985.
I'd say I got my money's worth out of it!
I am going to try living without a disposer for a while.
I really don't put much down it other than rotten lemons from my tree and sink strainer food debris.

Dead KitchenAid disposer

Hi Bill sorry your disposer I has died , it most likely has a bad top bearing, this disposer does not have any rotating cutters it had solid cutters cast as part of the rotating cutting wheel.

This was near the end of the National designed KitchenAid disposers they were very solid performers but no disposer lasts forever it’s one of the appliances with a shorter lifespan than many.

I’m staying in a small apartment right now in Reno Nevada for a week of vacation here and the apartment does not have a disposer and it’s driving me Crazy cleaning up from cooking etc. I don’t know how anybody can live without a disposer. I look at a trashcan full of all this food waste that could’ve been recycled by putting it down the drain and into a proper sewage disposal system instead it’s just gonna end up putting off methane in landfill instead of being turned into fertilizer.

36 years from a disposer--EXCELLENT considering what these machines do-shred waste!The shreds from my disposer go into my septic tank.No sewers in my area where I live-those who live in town-Greenville have a sewer system.
