I have the exact same one. Though, it has been repaired a couple of time. You will need the upper arm to work so the top rack of dishes are thoroughly clean.

As far as the water going on the floor. I tried first by taking the inside screen for the vent off and found it was full of gunk, cleaned it all out and now it is fine. I knew already there was no leaks in the door seal or under it and I noticed the towel on this one was under the vent on the outside. I'd try that before trashing it. Mine is a 1995 Whirlpool MOL and has worked fine for almost 19 years now. But that top spray arm definitely needs replacing.

Maybe something with hot grease was loaded into the dishwasher and it melted the wash arm?

That's quite impressively melted - looks like it's melted from inside out though, which is weird. I wonder what happened.

This is an excellent machine. It's basically the KitchenAid version of the Whirlpool PowerClean, the only differences really being the HydroSweep arm and the stainless steel interior. Get a replacement upper arm assembly and that thing will shine like new money.

As far as the leaking, I wonder if the supply tube for that upper arm is causing water to be forced down in areas it normally wouldn't be, such as the bottom of the door. Crazy things would happen like that when WP used the tower feed to the upper arm rather than directly, and the bladder that sealed the lower arm to the tower would leak and spray right at the bottom of the door, causing water to spew out.

Leaking WP Built KA DW

There are several different reasons why this DW might leak a little several of which have already been mentioned, in any case this type of problem is usually very easy to fix.

The Rubber feed tube for the upper wash arm deteriorates over time, from use especially if the machine has been used to wash CLEAN PRE-RINSED dishes with too much detergent.

It is easy to replace this rubber tube, it is exactly the same one KA used when Hobart built KA DWs except the tube was blue rubber.

I believe

the service part replaces the 3 piece rubber/vinyl part with a 1 piece plastic tube along with a new upper wash arm bearing.

Replacing The Rubber Feed Tube On A KA DW

Hi LP, you are completely correct that WP subs this part to a more durable rigid plastic assembly, however we usually use an aftermarket rubber tube to keep cost down for the consumer, in fact you can buy high quality tubing at many hardware stores that works fine.
