My Detergents Arrived

My detergents arrived today. I use Tide pods Free and Clear HE, Tide Simply Liquid Free and Clear non HE, Tide Simply Liquid Berry Blossom, Woolite Damage Defense and Snuggle Blue Sparkle Fabric Softner. Tide anything I love. The non HE free and clear makes lots of suds and I use it for smaller loads when a Pod is to much. The scented detergent is for occasional use only, Woolite for delicates. Softner for gowns, floor towels and family sheets. So excited to do some loads of laundry. 

 

 

What does everyone else use? What detergents do you have in your laundry room?

A nice Tide lineup you have there. My sister has used Tide Free & Gentle liquid for years. I’m also a Tide man at heart, although I currently use powdered detergents. Tide Professional and Tide Ultra Oxi powders both work very well in my SQ frontloader.

Here’s a new one to me: Tide Zero. Is this a recent addition to the Tide lineup or have I just not noticed it before?

Love Tide Zero.
Only place I can find it in my area is Target but even there it seems to becoming hard to find.

Tide "Zero" Is A Load of Marketing Rubbish

Detergent makers crack one up with "no phosphates, chlorine bleach or dyes.." nonsense.

American detergents never contained chlorine bleach. That was added separately if one wished.

Phosphates? They were largely gone even before recent federal government action that pretty much squashed whatever domestic laundry or dishwashing products contained the stuff.

That leaves "dyes". Ok, I'll give them that, but plenty of other offerings by P&G don't have dyes as well.

In terms of allergens fragrance is up there if not ranking above dyes.

I'm currently using Persil Advanced Clean laundry detergent pods and Snuggle Blue Sparkle fabric softener. They provide a nice scent to the clothes that is crisp and clean.

Persil ProClean Power-Liquid 2in1.  Persil ProClean Power-Pearls (while it lasts).  Cheer powder (while it lasts).  Ariel powder of some ilk (bio?).  Biz powder.  H-E-B Bravo Ultra Lavender softener (only on bedsheets).  STPP (every load).  Borax (sweaty/yardwork items).  Chlorine bleach (whites - socks, bath linens, kitchen linens).

Wisk DeepClean Original liquid (occasional use, while it lasts).  Fresh Start powder (rarely).

I use Clorox control bleach packs for whites. They're easier for me to manage unlike the liquid version.

Jerome and Glenn, I've never tried Persil, but now that you mention it I will look into it. How does it work compared to Tide? Scent strong?

 

Robert, are those powders vintage? How do you choose which powder to use? I love your lineup of detergents!

Yes all the stickers on the plastic containers are actual scans of the boxes that were poured into them. I'm going through my detergent collection on my display shelves by heating the bottom of the box with a heat gun gently and opening the box bottom and dumping them into sealed containers. Then I'm using library/archival safe glue to reseal the original now empty box bottom and back it goes onto the display shelves in the other room.

I use whatever I'm in the mood to use and having real vintage style suds in the vintage machines makes for a much more fun wash. Even though most of the original scents are gone the towels, sheets and clothes still have a wonderful light clean scent like I remember when I was a kid.

The Bendix, Horton and Lady Kenmore are the only machines that can't handle the suds so I use the Dash and Bold in those machines as they are both low-sudsing but still have that wonderful clean scent.

Another big plus is the rinse water is so much clearer (amazing difference actually) with phosphated detergent than with modern detergent.

I've got plenty more vintage detergent to use and I'm planning on using them all. The boxes will last longer empty as well.

Thats so wholesome, thank you for preserving history! I find suds are better in the wash too, much more fun. Simply Tide products produce a fair amount of suds which rinse away well. Unlike the Model T GE, Speed Queen does not suds lock easily so suds rarely cause hiccups. No stand pipe foaming either.  

 

Maybe its just me, but I find that detergents that suds tend to wash out dirt and grease better. I love a light sent but I have to go easy as scented detergents and I have a history of migraines and rashes. If all goes well I might give scented powders a try again.

 

 

Keep doing what you're doing and post more pics- I love what you're doing with your laundry.

I'm currently using Tide Ultra Oxi pods, and I don't care for them. I meant to get the Tide Ultra Oxi with odor eliminators pods as the smell in the regular Ultra Oxi pods is not the best. They smell really chemically, but the odor eliminators version smells a lot more like old-school laundry to me. However, my Shipt shopper picked out the other one when my preferred was out of stock without asking my permission. Guess they just figured what's the difference? In any case I'm stuck with these until I use them up, as I can't bring myself to just buy more prematurely.

My favorite go-to when I had my direct drive TL was Tide Clean Breeze. It cleans really well and I love the scent. In my opinion, the scent is as close to old school as modern P&G products get. However, I quit using liquid detergent when I bought my current washer as I'm never sure how much water the auto sense feature is going to use; therefore I wouldn't know from load to load how to dose it correctly. So, I started using pods to negate that issue.

Mostly, Tide With Bleach Powder. For a while I was alternating with Persil Stain Fighter liquid or whatever that was called. However, even though not labelled as an intense scent, over time it just became too overwhelming. I still have some Persil Power Pearls from before they were discontinued - which I like very much.
For very lightly soiled items or things that just need freshening, I will use Target's "Up and Up" Baby detergent. The scent is exactly the same as the old Baby All scent, before it was changed. However, recent trips to Target tell me that Henkel is producing that product as the current shelf stock smells just like the new All. So that option has limited life for me.

As for Robert's idea of using up the vintage detergents, I will start doing that. I have a fair amount of boxes and as long as the boxes remain intact, might as well use up the contents. They do a much better job and rinse clearer...

persil advanced clean

Persil Advanced Clean oxi+odor power smells like old school Wisk to me. It's light, crisp and clean to me. I find that it produces less suds yet cleans very well due to surfactants. Chetlaham, I find that it works better than even tide 10x did. I also use the snuggle blue sparkle softener to match the advanced clean.

I'll give Persil Advanced Clean a try. I will admit the small cap and clearish liquid looks unimpressive, but I guess looks can be deceiving. 

 

What do people think about Tide professional?

I’m using it in a load of mixed colors as we speak! The only detergent I like better is powdered Persil Bio—the Unilever version sold in the UK. I get the Persil online from British Essentials.
