dyson did not come up with the idea....

Other vacuum cleaner companies had the "great" idea to add color to their machines to make them stand out long before the dyson was ever dreamed of...here is a Hoover example from about 1971. It is Ceylon yellow and this machine really cleans your rug all very efficient using very little electric. You have to love that wild bag too. These machines just purr very quietly as you guide them over your rugs. Not enough good can be said about the classic Hoover Convertible. The whole color thing is great! What a great thread!

Another wild color from Hoover....

Here is another photo of a great American vacuum made right here in sunny North Canton OH (LOL! It snowed today!). This example is from 1972 and it is a "lesser" Convertible model in Bittersweet (orange). Again this machine quietly without a lot of fanfare cleans rugs very well. It is extremely well made. It is a very "groovy" vacuum for sure. Made right here too! Ah the good 'ole days!

And how about some GREEN from Hoover???

Here is my mom's Dial a Matic (DAM for short). This was a gift from my dad at Christmas 1977. The bright green is very eye catching, but the name of it escapes me. This is another example of a brightly colored vacuum from Hoover that really worked well and cleaned rugs. This example at least is also very durable as it lasted a long time in the hands of my mom! These vintage Hoover cleaners are getting very hard to find in thrift stores and flea markets. I just wanted a nice contrast to the dyson at the beginning of the thread. There are a lot of wild colors out there to catch the eye of the consumer. So please no hate mail...just my opinion. Hope you all like the photos out there in washer land. Oh these machines...

The first one is the 1076...the second is a U4001...and the last one is a U5017....They really are great machines. I am sure that there are many many out there still cleaning rugs in homes across America.

Those are beautiful Convertibles and I read the history on the orange model. Very interesting that those were compiled from extra parts for KMart...didn't realize that!

Of course the apple green DAM is awesome as well.

Orange Hoover

I have seen the yellow one around but never the orange first time I see one in that color but again alot of Hoover owners don't part with there vacuums that often either so who ever has the orange ones they must be a keeper for sure

Yes, the U4001 came in a lot of different colors. Some Kmart stores had one color and another might have a completely different color. However, the same good cleaning capability and Hoover quality remained the same. I found out how this came about from a good friend of mine here in North Canton who was an engineer at the time and worked on this machine. I am glad you learned something. Maybe one day you will run across one. I know if not for Jeff Parker, I would not have this one today. This was the last U4001 I needed to complete the set. So thanks Jeff!!!

There's been a green DAM sitting outside on the street at the local indoor flea market, for the last couple of months. I don't think it's that green though, seems lighter, but I've resisted because it looks a little to beaten to me.

Pete...you should grab the DAM while you can. There are fewer and fewer of these machines to be had. There were three green standard models the one like I posted, the 1130 (which is a very soft spring green), and the 1149 which is a louder "Bali" green from 1971.

Here is a very loud 728 Convertible from 1971. I think Hoover called it Camelia or something like that. Enjoy!

Here is a rather loud orange JCPenney cleaner from 1974 or so. This one was found at a flea market and I had to use the good ole' American dollar to convince the guy to sell it to me. He wanted to use it for parts! Anyway it has a good home here now. Check out that wild checked bag!

This great running and mint Hoover is labeled a Western Auto and it features this very unusual blue and white print bag with the big white top. This is a top fill model and uses type A bags. Very easy to change and not nearly as messy as some of these bagless cleaners. Plus the "A" bags can be had in Allergen version if you want and are rather inexpensive unlike some of those bagless filters. Hope you liked the pictures!

I love those checked-bag Penneys ones. My friend Roger (or was it our friend Michael, anyway we were all together!) in AZ, found one in a dark green. You or Jeff or someone posted one like the blue one with the square top bag and I was so blown away by that, as I'd always associated that with Eureka.

Is Hoover still manufacturing or having manufactured in their name C and D bags or has that market now been left to secondary suppliers?

I think that many of the Hoover bags are being "outsourced" now. The paper bag plant here in Canton, OH is still up and running but I think that they are making some of the more popular styles of bags.
