No I don't have radiant floor heating (but wish I did!). I just had all the electric baseboard heaters replaced with hot water baseboard heaters. I have 5 zones in the house of which 3 are controlled by automatic thermostats (master bedroom, main bathroom, living/dining area) and 2 zones are controlled by regular thermostats (guest bedroom, lower level).

I am facinated by the light used in the video - it is called a timing light? How does it work? Would I be able to use one to find out my washer's spin speeds through the glass window?

That light

is called a strobe light and was invented by a man named Edgerton at MIT in the 50's. As you can see it stops action so you can see what is going on at speed. They are called timing lights in the auto industry because of their use to check valve and spark timing at idle speed.

Thanks. Are you adjusting the speed of the strobe to determine the spin speed, or is it doing that automatically? My understanding is that you must know the approx speed because you could set the speed at half or twice the spin speed and still get the same results. Is that correct?

we have an older version of that light at work-a Strobetac-Yes--like shown in the video to measure speed(RPM) and observe a high speed object in motion(washer tub)Ours has a xenon lamp as the strobe-and a calibrated knob that indicates speed.It hasn't been used in years.suggested this to OLight-maker of LED flashlights-they make the strobe function on their lights variable----Then you have a strobe light for measuring speeds and observing motion.would be nice.Sometimes we need to see something in motion here.

there is a vernier dial

on the strobe that you adjust manually to the point where motion stops then you can read the speed off the dial. An expensive strobe has a very very fine tuned vernier & oscillator circuit, it used to be the xenon tube and power supply was expensive but now they power car headlights,  the controls are what drive the price now.

The strobe Jon and I used in the video is an Extech Stroboscope Tachometer. I have had it about 10 years now. It is fun to to see in action, but it is tricky to get the speed set.

Laser Tachometer

This tachometer is much easier to use. It uses a laser to measure the speed. It must have a reflective target on the moving object. It's much faster to use, but doesn't give the stoped action view of the strobe.

Have noticed, over the years, that sometimes, in certain slants of light, and combinations of color, the Unimatic spins seem to slow down, freeze, and reverse direction.

Without a strobe light, I got an almost static view of agitator of my W3-224 GMini washer while it was spinning when I filmed it with a fluorescent light. But I have no idea of the actual spin speed. Should be less than half of your Unimatic according to the factory specs!

Single bulb and HID lights can act as fixed frequency strobe lights--60Hz.Sometimes use them to set TT speed in a studio.Some HID and flourescent lights run on modern solid state or digital ballsts-the operating frequency of these is much higher-so the object veiwed under them would have to be spinning really fast to get any freeze-motion strobe action.With the modern ballasts- since the bulb frequency is so high-you don't see any flicker.modern SS and digital ballasts run the bulb at frequencies from 20Khz to 60Khz.also you don't hear any humming or buzzing.
