Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

say hello to last year

This machine was a portable, brand new, never used, so I just removed the outer cabinet and converted it to "built-in" and am almost done installing it. Its a 1980, the last year Hobart made these wonderful machines. They were then taken over by Whirlpool and were still a great dishwasher for many more years. This one has a 7.9amp, 1/2hp motor and WOW is it LOUD, I mean it shakes the house and I love it ...... hahahaha. You can hear the water "sizzlin", heating up while it pauses and the yellow light is on. I will probably install a stainless steel front panel or go black, right now its almond color.

new KA interior, MINT !!!!!!!

Porcelain is like new, I didn't realize that the last year Hobart made KA dw's that Hobart had not only introduced the upper spray arm but put the diagonal holes at the very opposite ends of the upper spray arm to get glasses in the corners of the upper rack. Does anyone know the years that the "upper spray arm" was made and then what year the holes at the very opposite ends of the upper spray arm were introduced?

He found it brand new, while not looking for it..... :)

Nice dishwasher Greg! That will look sooo kewl with the stainless steel front. Those are very noisy. My parents had the 1975 version of that Kitchen-Aid. I talked them into buying that vs a Kenmore. Dad used to HATE it when mom started that thing up after dinner. It would drown out the sound on the TV in the next room was why! HA! HA! Good for mom!! LOL!
The dishwasher was still running when I sold the house in 1997.

This looks like a KD-21 series (KDI-61 = Imperial model of 21 series, 61 instead of 21 meant it was a convertible/portable) the 21 series was produced beginning in March 1984. This was the last of the portables Hobart made, Whirlpool bought the domestic appliance div. of Hobart in the spring of 1986.

Great machine Greg! I love Kitchen Aids. A KDI-61 is the portable version of KDI-21. The upper spray arm was introduced on the 18 series, not sure about extra holes. My friend Roger in Arizona has a 17 and an 18, and it was fun to look at them and see what changes had been made between the two models. Some cycle names also changed, and the lower rack layout changed dramatically. The 18's tub is taller, I'm assuming to accomodate the extra spray arm.

I'm pretty sure KA was owned by Hobart until 1986 actually, and the last of the Hobart design machines (one of which I owned, I believe it was 23 series) was made in 1996.

Greg N and I must have been posting at the same time, LOL. Didn't see his info before I started yammering!

date correction

Hey Greg, thanks for the more accurate dates, so this is an '84 then ? coooooool !!! I must be confused with GM Frigidaire which I believe sold off to White Westinghouse in 1980. But I didn't realize that Hobart didn't sell off until '86. I also have the identical DW called "In-Sink-Erator", same controls, everything, but it must be a Whirlpool made whereas it is a 1987 machine, but I am holding on to it for parts for this one ............ again, gheeez is this thing LOUD ........ it sounds industrial .......

thanks Bob

as you can see "rickr" bustin my chops as to how I find appliances though I am "not lookin", ahahhahahahaha

Well, I know of one much loved KDS-15 that got a lot quieter when wrapped it in an insulated blanket taken from a "cast-off" machine! Hope you enjoy that machine!

Seems to me it took a while for the Whirly folks to start fooling around with the KA design so I think there were machines produced well after 1986 that were still the basic KA design. I keep thinking it was well into the '90's before WP started to re-design the machine.

I would be interested to hear comments-----and I'm sure to be quickly corrected if in error.

Noisy? My firt new dw I bought in approx 76 was a KA avacado portable but the model that had the controls on the top back like a washer so it couldn't be built in.. One dial and a rinse/hold button was all I think, porcelain interior and only a bottom 4 arm spray, no top or middle, hidden heat element. I don't remember it being noisy though. I sold it when I bought my first house with the POS built in Whirpool.
It was a great dw even without the middle arm.

Congratulations Greg on your "new" dishwasher. You just can't beat a Hobart Kitchen Aid. Glad that you are in your new home. Can't wait for you to post some picture. Who knows you may be hosting a "wash in" yourself one of these days.

Maybe an extra blanket of insulation would be the ticket. I wonder if the Imperial does not have as much sound insulation as a Superba (kind of like "quiet pack" on a Sears washer). My mom's KDS-21 built-in Superba was not noisy at all, but Roger's Imperials are somewhat loud, although I think portables are always a bit louder because they're not encased in the cabinets.
